Rooster recently posted regarding resurgence of Pertussis. I received the same warning today recommending that adolescents and adults get a booster of Tdap as childhoom immunization decreases over time. Pertussus should be suspected with:
paroxysmal cough of any duration
Cough with inspiratory whoop
post tussive vomiting
cough illness associated with apena in an infant.
Diagnosis is made by swab from the Naso pharynx
You should stay home for five days after receiving antimicrobial treatment.
It is easily transmissable with an 80% secondary attack rate.
Evidently we adults and adloescents with waning immunity are a reservoir for the infection and some of us can pass it on to children too young to be vaccinated. Here is a link to the CDC's schedule for immunizations.:http://http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/recs/schedules/default.htm.
