Questions To Ask Your Sleep Doctor About Your Sleep Evaluation & Titration

I've blatantly purloined this list from Roster's post at cpaptalk.com because I think they are so very pertinent and important.

Questions to ask about your PSG and Titration Study
by CPAPtalk member rooster

1. Did I have any central apneas? How many?

2. Were there any comorbidities? What were they?

3. Did I breathe or leak through my mouth? How often? What do you recommend to prevent it?

3. Did I exhibit Positional Sleep Apnea (PSA)? Was my apnea more severe in one sleeping position as compared to others? Is my pressure requirement higher in one position as compared to others? (Often sleep apnea is more severe when sleeping on the back.)

4. Is there anything else unusual about the results?

5. How will I know my therapy is preventing apneas?

6. I am determined to own a data-capable machine and software to monitor apneas, hypopneas and mask leak. This will allow me to call your office with specific questions if I have problems with the therapy. Will you help me with the appropriate prescription?

I would also add:

1] Request a copy of the doctor's dictated results AND the full scored data summary report w/condensed graphs from both your sleep evaluation AND your titration. You have a LEGAL RIGHT to these copies under HIPAA.

2] Request that you be given a copy of your equipment order (prescription) You will want to shop your local DME provider options before committing to purchase and you will also need that script should your PAP or accessories be lost, stolen or broken while traveling.

3] Ask that your equipment order (script) include:
     a] access to AHI, AI and Leak data turned on;
     b] heated humidifer;
     c] full face, nasal cushion, nasal pillows or oro-nasal mask of patient's choice.

I still think that a big "How are you today?" would be nice.
*giggle* You still think we owe the sleep docs that much courtesy, eh, Rock Hinkle??

You sure you aren't running w/the wrong crowd?? *wicked grin*

So what questions do YOU think a new patient should be asking their sleep doctor about their evaluation and titration PSGs???
I don't see those questions as at all discourteous or disrespectful. I see them as entirely reasonable. Nor do I see them as "grilling" the doctor.
I agree Judy. You're paying for a product regardless if it's a car, tv, bottle of beer, MD consult....If you're not getting what you're expecting...ask.
Thank you, Walt.
