Question regarding the head gear for those that use the full face mask by Rezmed

Does any one else's headgear STRETCH to the point that you could use a new one more often than the 6 month which Medicare's guidelines say one can have them?  I called Medicare because the supplier will only send a "generic headgear" which doesn't work, really, I've tried.  Medicare said that those guidelines were set because "they" feel that's all that is needed.  Mine really stretches to the point that I have to pull it way past the velcroe.

Anyhow, Medicare said I needed to talk to my supplier, tell them to go ahead and send me another one and bill Medicare.  Medicare will deny payment but I can appeal it and write what I told her about it and then they might start paying for more.  I'd rather have a new headgear than a face mask or hose or water container.

If your mask headgear stretches or is too big to begin with, a pair of scissors to cut the straps to length and a strip of velcro to put the cut ends back together works very well.

I pull up a fold of strap to what feels like a good fit, then hold the fold in place w/velcro for a few days and when I've got the fit right I cut out the fold and velcro the cut ends together.

The strap is fine for the first month or so but it STRETCHES out and I have to pull it tighter and it makes dents in my cheeks even though I use the cloth liners.  Hard to explain.

I use the FitLife Total Face Mask.  I wear the large and the headgear is too big so I wear a little kufi cap (knit cotton cap) on the crown of my head  and that takes up the slack very nicely.  I bought small headgear that works fine, but it's funny I prefer to use the large headgear with the cap.  The cap makes the straps more comfortable.  The caps are cotton and cheap- about $3.

With the cloth liners there are some square pieces of cloth that I never understood what they were for; maybe that is what it's for; I'll try that tonight.  Thanks for your post.

The small square pieces are usually for the forehead piece on some masks.  The older quattro has one, the FX does not.

My supply company told me they will send me a new mask every three months.  Medicare is my primary insurance and Blue Cross Blue Shield is my secondary.  I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I found a place online a few years back and bought some stretchy Velcro bands for a project I was working on.  When my strap got too stretched out, I cut off some lengths of that Velcro and used a candle to take care of the fraying.  It works great and holds better than the stuff they sell from the manufacturer.

Yes, I can get the new mask every 3 months but it's the head gear that you strap on that they will only pay for it every 6 months.  I too have Medicare as my primary and United Health Care for my secondary.

Isn't it weird because I can get a new mask every 3 months, but the headgear is packaged with the mask.  Still they charge me separately.

Who is your supplier?  If Medicare will only pay for one every 6 months and Medicare is your primary, your supplier ispaying for it.  I think my secondary will only pay a portion of what Medicare doesn't pay for; not sure if they tried to file a claim with my secondary or not.  Interesting.

I'm on Social Security Disability with Anthem- It's actually called Anthem Medicare I think.  My supplier is not swallowing the cost for sure.  I find it hard to believe they can charge separately for things that come packaged together.  I think next time I order a mask I'll tell them I don't need the headgear as mine does not seem to stretch out too much to use.  If you end up with an extra set of straps it might be worth hand washing and putting it in the dryer (velcro all the velcro parts together to prevent them from filling with lint).
