I can't think of any labs in my area that don't have those guidelines in place, except the AED at every bedside. I certainly do hope this tragedy will get the attention of lab administrators who's only knowledge of what happens in a sleep lab involves the dollar signs. Specifically the labs that are still considering 3:1 patient ratio, in a 4 bed lab...with ...."virtual" techs there to help!

What are talking about? The only death to happen in a sleep lab was at Emory. The pt in question was a 25 yr old mentally handicap man that weighed 350ilbs with cardiomyopathy. The lab was proven to have done nothing wrong in this tragic event.

My point exactly. Tens of thousands of studies...and one death once.

Even if a 24/7 registered nurse had been on site (which the new guidelines call for), it's unlikely that his life could have been saved BUT the cost to everyone of an overnight would increase. In addition, people with marginal health conditions, who could really use CPAP therapy, might be rejected for an overnight evaluation until, say, they lose weight or meet some damned requirement.

The video, which shows the man waving his hands for help, did receive immediate attention. The attendant got him to sit up and arranged to rush him promptly to the hospital. I think he died before he got to the ER (not sure about this detail).

Finally, let's not ignore the fact that the family, while no doubt devastated (I would be crushed, too) also wants to collect $$$ and this appears to look like a "good" opportunity. I don't want to play into that.Unintended consequences, and all that.
