Please help a newbie with a cpap Q
Hi folks, I need a little help here with the cpap machine. Apria (my least favorite vendor) brought my cpap machine to me 5 days ago, they tell me that I will be paying for this machine for 10 months then it becomes a purchase. I told them what if I do not want to purchase this machine? They tell me that this is how it works!
Can someone recommend a good machine? I really do not want to deal with Apria but the doc's office tells me that my insurance will not pay lincare.
The machine they brought out to me is a REMstar Plus C-Flex.

The one I listed is the "auto".
Be very careful as all the manufacturers make the models confusing. It makes it easier for the DME to stick you with a less-than-the-best machine.

Yes I see you are right, they are different machines. What does the auto do? My machine starts on 6 and ends up at 16 after a little while.

"AutoPAP - also known as "auto-titrating CPAP", "auto-adjusting CPAP", or "self-adjusting CPAP."
CPAP is set for one continuous pressure. An AutoPAP can be set to deliver a range of low/high pressures, customizable within 4 - 20 cm H2O.
An AutoPAP differs from a CPAP in that an AutoPAP uses algorithms to sense subtle changes in the user's breathing and deliver only the amount of pressure necessary to keep the airway open.
An AutoPAP automatically varies the pressure to prevent and/or correct sleep disordered breathing events - apneas, hypopneas, air flow restrictions, and snores.
Computer software is available for AutoPAP machines, which will allow a user or clinician to download the recorded data into a PC. This data can be put in report form to track treatment results.

Not to discourage you from your plan of action, but auto mode did not work for me. I have a ResMed VPAP Auto 25 which is set in spontaneous mode. It delivers a set IPAP and EPAP. I found with the machine is in auto mode it never reached (or rarely) the maximum pressure prescribed while I was still having significant apneas. Of course it did take the doc and me a few months to figure this out. Usually if you fail therapy on one setting or machine the doc will write a new prescription for internal settings or a new machine. What you have, though considering what Banyon says, may just work fine for you. Don't stop asking questions.
If the software seems overwhelming right now, wait until you're comfortable with the machine.

Thank you for all this info, it really helps me, I try to research and get as much info as I can when dealing with issues I am not that familiar with,and I thank you,
can you tell me how I can get the software so I can track my progress?

I did not mean to suggest that auto settings are the way to go for Linda. Only that an auto machine is top of the line. An auto machine can be set to "straight CPAP" (single pressure) or auto. But a CPAP machine cannot be set to "auto".
The auto gives you the chance to tweak the settings and see which works best for you.
Since there is so little difference in price, I would always opt for the auto.

Linda, I read your question re: CPAP Machine and Apria. I also am not impressed with them. I have Kaiser and Kaiser will not pay for my equipment. Apria says that I have to pay all costs up front. Are you on a payment plan with Apria. I have severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea and no one seems to want to be helpful. Thank you.

Hi Candace,
Apria is giving me a payment plan for 10 months, after that I will buy it if I still need it. In the mean time, all of the folks here are so helpful they told me the best cpap to get and low and behold, Apria did not give me a newer model. I called my Dr and he was supposed to send them another script for the other machine.
Try Lincare, I hear they are pretty good or start a post here and ask which would be the best. these ppl here are really on top of it,
Do not let them push you around
