Laura Hand posted this as a comment elsewhere:

"This is the exact reason I bypassed the insurance all together and purchased my machine out right. I took the advice from here about getting a script written fo a "machine and mask of the patients comfort" and asked for my data. My doctor looked at me like I was insane. (how dare I be an empowered patient) I looked at the script and set the machine up myself, and tucked the instruction manual (that says plainly on the front to remove before giving to patient) away for future reference. I had my machine in my house and set up and using it for four days before the DME even contacted me....much less started the process to actually get a machine.
If my life depends on this machine, you better believe I will be an expert on how to use it!!"

Good for Laura for being so proactive!!! With her attitude she surely will be a success story!!
This is good stuff. I love this attitude.

Sadly for my job security, this is not rocket surgery (kidding...kidding).

Hell yes you should take charge of your treatment. Drives me nuts when people can't even muster up enthusiasm for their own treatment. Sure some of the terms and concepts are confusing at first, but everything in life you haven't experienced yet has some sort of learning curve.

Best line that applies to everything health related: "If my life depends on this machine, you better believe I will be an expert on how to use it!!"

Apply this to medication too. (separate rant that kills me too. If you're taking pills you better damn well know what they do and if there are any troublesome side effects or better options) "What is that pill for?" "Don't know...but I take it and these other 14 every night." Are you kidding me?

Back to CPAP. Learn the terms. Learn how CPAP functions. Learn it all, because no clinician is going to care more about you than YOU. A+ for Laura

Dang...now I'm all fired up!
