I feel like I am learning so much by reading everything posted on the board (it takes some time to work through the discussions).

I was just reading one thread about the benefits of starting cpap early, before health problems crop up.

So, my question is, at the age of 57, I am pretty sure I should have been diagnosed years (if not decades) ago. I do have health issues now.

Now that I am on cpap, I already know I feel better and am sleeping better, but are the health issues set in stone, or do some things improve (weight, diabetes, bp, for instance).

From what I have read, some improve. The weight though will continue to be a struggle. Some will come off as a result of being more active but from what people on here say it will take eating better and exercising to take the weight off. As far as BP, if your weight goes down, you are eating better etc i would think logically it would improve. Good luck with your therapy.
Now that you o2/co2 are at their appropriate levels and your getting healthy sleep your body will begin to heal what it can. At the same time with help of your PCP you should start to see what your body is going to need help with. Some things you might have to live with. the important thing to remember is that CPAP is the first step. With a little discipline you could still live a very long happy life. A controllable diet, some active exercising, and good sleep are key.
I think things can definitely improve!

I tell you what. I've been horribly overweight since 1994, and was dx in 2005. I've been very compliant with my cpap, but didn't lose any weight from that alone. I joined WeightWatchers in May, but this is my 3rd time trying it. BUT I've been thinking about it and this is the first time I've done any "diet" since being on cpap. And you know what? THIS time it's working! Lost 27 lbs in 11 weeks without adding in any exercise (yet!).

I think being on the cpap helps me have the energy and concentration to take control of my diet and eat better. It was just too much to handle when I needed every scrap of energy I had just to make it thru life.
I am 56 and have some major health issues, including the ones you listed. My feeling is that yes, since you are getting proper sleep now, and the body does its healing during sleep, things should improve with additional help from you. I now have the energy to walk and breathe at the same time, so that is exercise for me which helps my diabetes and weight. Good luck and work towards a more healthful life now that you are getting the benefits of sleeping.
All sound advise. I was just kind of having some angst about all the years of damage for not starting sooner.

I know that if cpap were a magic machine, it would be on all the weight loss boards, so I wasn't expecting the weight to just fall off.

As I said, I think I have just been having some angst.

I am finding that I have a sleepy slump late in the afternoons. I had those all day long before cpap and couldn't fight them. I haven't napped yet, but do get so sleepy around 4 or 5.

What I am finding kind of interesting is when I wake up in the morning, I am awake. I have never been a morning person, never chipper, but it took me forever to wake up. I just seem ...awake!
