Washington, USA - It might cause somnolence and concentration difficulties
(WAPA) - The American NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) has required FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) to insert among the medical checks required to airline pilots also those for sleep apnea (OSA), as this has been found as one of the causes of February 13, 2008, accident when the pilots of a Go! Bombardier CRJ-200 flew past their destination, Hilo (Hawaii), because they had fallen asleep.
"Commercial pilots who suffer from OSA are significantly under-diagnosed -said the board in a note- The NTSB recommends that the FAA develops guidance for pilots, employers and physicians on how to identify and treat people at high risk of OSA".
Sleep apnea is characterized by repeated episodes of pauses in breathing during sleep. Among the symptoms of this disease there are also daily somnolence, morning headaches, memory and concentration difficulties. (Avionews)
