OK, I'm still new at all of this but want to share some things that enhances my sleep even more. I've lately been doing Neti Pot flushes before sleep to keep the sinuses clear. Is this a good idea? Anyone else have a solution for stuffy sinuses? I find that it really helps my breathing better, so I guessing its OK to do

I do the same thing. You might also try Neilmed sinus rinse bottle. Heard people have luck with that too. Using sinus irrigation is an excellent thing to do everyday. Kind of like brushing your teeth. That's how I look at it.
David, I've heard some people have luck with this Grossan nasal irrigation system too.
eh! David how are you? I have one of these Neti Pots too..neva tried it though! I hear it's really great if you get a cold or just plain congestion! I guess after a year of having the Neti Pot I should give it a try! LOL!
i have been having problems with sinuses also, but i cant find a real relief. what is neti pot?
This is a saline solution that is used to flush and cleanse the nasal passages and also hydrate the tissues. You can make your own saline with a little salt and baking soda in warm water, but it is tricky to get a well balanced solution so that it does not burn the sensitive nasal tissue. I believe the Neti Pot is modeled after a pot of the same shape used in India to cleanse the nasal passages by Yogi's, and adopted here with some modifications. I like the NeilMed Nasal Rinse bottle and premixed packets. I have not tried the Neti Pot. It looks like you have to crook your neck to get the water flow into your nose. This is difficult for me, but the bottle is easy to use with head straight forward, making it much easier. The bottle design makes it easy to get a gentle flow as well. It is kind of like the old use of salt water for a gargle or mouth rinse but used in the nose.
OK. Duane in North Dakota back here again. I just soundly dissed Neti (I guess that I called it "Nati", but that is how it used to be spelled. The nasal douche is thoroughly NASTY plus the worst pain you could imagine! Great! Flush your brain and nasal cavities with salt water! YIKES!

I've meditated for over 35 years, spent two summers in India and do Yoga regularly. A few members of our group just got "into" Neti, and it's packaged stuff these days. It used to be a teaspoon of salt in a cup of water, and, no, we did NOT have Neti pots, nor did they have them in India or amongst the Indian Communities in Kenya, where I lived for seven years.

I'd say it's a cultural thing. Use a USA saline spray. I'm a University Prof and singer, and all of the vocalists - when they have colds - use the mild saline mist sprays, cheap and effective, and if you have a concert, a quickie Prednizone routine (singer's secret for survival).

What I recommended to Susan what to check out ACCUPRESSURE! It's simply wonderful for sinus and nasal relief and you really need to RUN to the library or pick up a book now. I've used this since the early '70's and this was the ONE THING that Deb initially bought into. In five minutes, you can relieve a headache, clear your head and massage your sinuses (there are specific points and channels: check the books) and ACCUPRESSURE really works.

You COULD use Accupunture, but that's not for daily usage in our culture. I once went in for a back sprain (again, '70's) and the Accupuncturist noticed that I had a cold. He asked me if I wanted to get rid of that, too, and amazingly, I left that office an hour later with back pain gone and clear sinuses and the cold didn't come back. They were a couple from Holland, and I've used accupunture throughout life for many different things.

Accupressure, however, you do YOURSELF or with your partner, and you will get REALLY good at it. This is much more pleasant and I believe more effective than a salt water nasal douche!

Sorry, but Neti is REALLY NASTY, and I myself am a Siddha! Ha! I'm also an American, however, and some alternative treatments are REALLY great (THE AMA has not got all of the goods on healing, eh?) but others, like Neti, you just might bypass. Duane in North Dakota.
Hi Duane,
Thanks for your input. I am not surprised to hear that the name "Neti Pot" is an American marketing gimmick. I also understand your dislike of using a saline nasal rinse of whatever kind. It took me some time to get used to. The Neilmed bottle made all the difference for me. It also requires you to learn how to close your throat to keep the fluid up in the nasal passages where you want it, kind of like when you have your head under water while swimming. It can also be kind of messy until you get used to doing it. If the saline mist sprays work for you, great. That is not as much of a "flush" as it is for adding moisture to dry and or inflamed tissues. The saline flush goes further to help remove mucus along with allergens and/or bacteria, sort of like the difference between using mouth wash instead of spaying something in your mouth. As per jnk's earlier post, the suggestion to do the flush an hour before bedtime, I believe this is due to the tendency of the saline to trigger mucus drainage for a while after use, which can be uncomfortable when lying down, and especially when using a CPAP. The drainage of the mucus does relieve sinus pressure, providing your body isn't continually making a bunch more! In my experience, the flush is more effective at this than a spray.

I am intrigued with the idea of using acupressure, which I have tried a long time ago, to relieve headache. I had some success with pain reduction short term, but I do not recall it triggering actual reduction of congestion or tissue swelling. Maybe the pressure points for that are different than for just headache. Hot compresses can help also for this type of pressure/pain, but not available when at work, etc. I have not had the chance to try acupuncture, but have thought I would like to, for various ailments such as Migraine.

It is good to have a variety of tools available to help you, as some are better for some symptoms and circumstances than others. When you're suffering, relief is what counts.

My ear nose and throat specialist recomended frequent nose spraying with water with a little salt and bicarb of soda. My wife says half a teaspoon of each in 100 mls of water. You can buy it at the chemist but making it up is cheaper. RL(below) suggests that you experiment with the dosage of salt and soda.
