OK. Duane in North Dakota back here again. I just soundly dissed Neti (I guess that I called it "Nati", but that is how it used to be spelled. The nasal douche is thoroughly NASTY plus the worst pain you could imagine! Great! Flush your brain and nasal cavities with salt water! YIKES!
I've meditated for over 35 years, spent two summers in India and do Yoga regularly. A few members of our group just got "into" Neti, and it's packaged stuff these days. It used to be a teaspoon of salt in a cup of water, and, no, we did NOT have Neti pots, nor did they have them in India or amongst the Indian Communities in Kenya, where I lived for seven years.
I'd say it's a cultural thing. Use a USA saline spray. I'm a University Prof and singer, and all of the vocalists - when they have colds - use the mild saline mist sprays, cheap and effective, and if you have a concert, a quickie Prednizone routine (singer's secret for survival).
What I recommended to Susan what to check out ACCUPRESSURE! It's simply wonderful for sinus and nasal relief and you really need to RUN to the library or pick up a book now. I've used this since the early '70's and this was the ONE THING that Deb initially bought into. In five minutes, you can relieve a headache, clear your head and massage your sinuses (there are specific points and channels: check the books) and ACCUPRESSURE really works.
You COULD use Accupunture, but that's not for daily usage in our culture. I once went in for a back sprain (again, '70's) and the Accupuncturist noticed that I had a cold. He asked me if I wanted to get rid of that, too, and amazingly, I left that office an hour later with back pain gone and clear sinuses and the cold didn't come back. They were a couple from Holland, and I've used accupunture throughout life for many different things.
Accupressure, however, you do YOURSELF or with your partner, and you will get REALLY good at it. This is much more pleasant and I believe more effective than a salt water nasal douche!
Sorry, but Neti is REALLY NASTY, and I myself am a Siddha! Ha! I'm also an American, however, and some alternative treatments are REALLY great (THE AMA has not got all of the goods on healing, eh?) but others, like Neti, you just might bypass. Duane in North Dakota.
