My mask is chafing me badly... any new ideas?
Hi All,
I just got a new mask from my doc last week. It is a Mirage Quattro full face mask. While it is way better than what I've had previously (as far as leaks), the darn thing is rubbing all the hide off my forehead and the bridge of my nose.
I have used the foam disks (make up pads) for padding. It rubbed me raw through those. I put a bandana (like a headband) on and it rubbed through that. Last night I used the pads with the bandana... and it still chewed me up.
I've got big scuffs that look (and feel) like burns on my forehead thanks to the rubbing. It is also scraping the meat off the bridge of my nose when I try to adjust it so the thing doesn't hurt my forehead so much.
I had the tech at the hospital fit the mask for me. It was fine (or I thought) until I had to wear it all night. When I loosen the straps up, the dang thing leaks like crazy.
I know this issue has been addressed in the past, but I really don't have the energy (because I'm STILL not sleeping soundly) to search through everything on here.
Any thoughts?

I would try another mask. I used the same mask my first time on cpap. The mask rubbed my nose so raw that it caused an infection that spread to my eyes and swelled them shut. The doctor and cpap supplier kept telling me to keep using it, that I would get used to it. I came close to losing my nose before the doctor decided maybe the mask was not the right choice for my face. If you having as much trouble as you said it may be time for a change.

I had the same problem especially on my nose (also using Full Face Quattro) and I used bandage strips and band aids but I still had blisters, then I discovered Comfort Care Sleep Pads and overnight it changed. I now might sometimes have a slight red spot that disappears after a few hours but no sores, no blisters - the change was unbelieveable (if only I could get a company to retail them in Australia it would be perfect!)

The Sleep Comfort Care Pads, available from most on line reatilers, and perhaps through your DME might work well for you. In the mean time ask your Doc or DME about laying offf the mask until it heals up. I had the same situation, though not as bad as Carl, and had to take off 19 days before my nose healed. I then found the Respironics FitLike Total Face Mask which by passes the nose completely and has worked out well for me. I usually have no leaks at night and find the mask comfortable.

Crabby, I forgot about padacheek. She's fast and makes a good product. I needed something special from her for just the problem you described and she put in an extra thick nose piece for me.

I will check padacheek out. I don't want to switch masks (again) because this one I'm using now leaks the least of any I've tried in the past several months. Thanks for the advice!

I think the quattro is a good mask except for that nose bridge irritation problem. I wore it for almost two years before the problem got so bad everyone I saw said "what happened to your nose?"

I tried wearing a band aid on the bridge of my nose the other night and it helped, but not enough. Most of the "solutions' that I've found end up causing to much air to leak. I started wearing the bandana (folded in several layers and tied like a headband) under the forehead pads about 3 nights ago. It has helped a lot with the forehead problem, once it healed up. It's the same premise as the Pad A Cheek I suppose. I like the Quattro (as much as you can like something you hate) because I am very claustrophobic and it gives me a little room between my face and the mask... if that makes sense. Thanks!

I'M NOT A 100% SURE OF THE NAME OF MY MASK I THINK IT'S CALLED A PROFILE LITE IT HAS A THICK GEL CUSHION ON THE FORHEAD PIECE AND THE ALL AROUND THE MASK. I STILL END UP WITH RED MARKS ON THE BRIDGE OF MY NOSE AND FOREHEAD BUT THEY FADE IN AN HOUR OR SO. I CAN'T IMAGINE NOT HAVING THEM AS THE AREAS ARE STILL A BIT SORE FROM PRESSURE, NOT RAW JUST A BIT BRUISED FEELING. THIS MAY BE RELATED TO MY FIBRO MYALGIA (sp)

I had a lot of problems with leaking until I went to the small mask. Yes. It feels small, but it isn't too small. The larger mask covered part of my eyes and couldn't match the contours of my face when I changed positions.
You might want to try that new chafing gel that came out for chafing from clothes or skin. Or an inexpensive alternative might be corn starch.
