I've got my 6 week follow-up on thursday and I need to know what I should be asking them. As it stands I can't manage a full night's sleep with my mask. I'm using a full-face and as I'm just about falling asleep my jaw relaxes so much it drops back a little and a leak occurs along the bottom of the mask. MY mouth doesn't really open when I sleep but that action makes a leak which wakes me up. On the few occasions I do get to sleep I normally wakes up after an hour or so and take the mask off.

So what should I be saying to the sleep study people?

Dear Russ,

I have had my share of face leaks during the night. I can empathize with your present life situation.

I have graduated to a BPAP machine from a CPAP. I have been dealing with sleep apnea for over 15years. I've had the surgeries, etc. I use an Ultime Mirage full face medium sized mask. I have use towelettes to keep the mask as clean as possible. I have only been using a chin strap more recently and it has helped a great deal. When the leaks get disturbing, I have found using an elastic band across the top half or bottom half of the mask to stabilize the movement of my mask at night and it presses the mask and its cushion against my mask that permits me to have a better night's sleep.

Fortunately for me, I am a disabled vet who has had regular sleep studies and get a new mask every 6-9 months. I really am quite impressed with how our VA system has been improving in its new protocols and processes to deliver better health care.

Hope these comments may help.
Hi Russ,

If you can, take a look at a webpage called www.nomask.com
It is funny looking, but addresses your situation well. Otherwise, a nasal mask and one of the newer version chinstraps might solve your mouth drop problem. Hang in there. The benefits of the therapy are worth the adjustment period.
Thanks but as I've repeatedly said, my mouth doesn't drop.

Russ how do you know that your mouth does not open? you did not have a study. has someone watched you sleep? I don't know if i have already said this, but you should put a full mask on with you mouth slightly open. This will prevent leaks.

I have been using the cpap machine with the full face mask for 4 years. I don't know what the reason is that
someone talks about their mouths dropping. I have had to keep my mouth from dropping from the beginning.
That meant I have had to wear a chin strap ever since. My number is 17 and I am faithful to wearing the
machine. But if you don't your want your mouth to drop, get a chin strat that is made for your problem.
