I have been using my ResMed S 8 Autoset II machine for about a week. Before that I used a ResMed Escape. I noticed that when using the new machine I find it ver easy to breathe both in and out. I do wake up several times throughout the night, just enough to look at the clock, roll over and go back to sleep. When I wake up I notice that it feels like the machine isn't on...I can't feel the pressure at all. Sometimes I pull the nasal pillows off just to make sure it is on. Plus the machine is very quiet.

1.) Is it normal to be waking up? (I used to wake up throughout the night before CPAP, and could always go right back to sleep).
2.) Is the machine working if I am still tired? I wondered from reading all the posts if I am having leaks from my mask. Or maybe I am just hoping to feel like superwoman when I wake up everyday.
3.) Do you notice a distinct difference in your symptoms when your therapy is spot-on and when you have leaks?

I am getting software and a reader in a week, so I don't have data to post as yet. I had someone who has OSA (not on the forum) tell me that if the Escape was set to 11 then my Autoset should not be set at 6 and 8. He said it should be more like 8 and 15. So maybe I am not getting enough pressure?

Any thoughts from you guys would be much appreciated.

A number of things are possible.
- You could be sensitive to Auto-Adjust and might be better off if it was set to CPAP mode
- Pressure range could be off, but you'll have a better idea about that once you start reading your data (you can push left and right buttons simultaneiously to see Efficacy Data if you want to see what's going on right away)
- You didn't mention if you woke up at night with the Escape - is it better or worse with the Autoset II? It can be very normal to wake up during the night. Many different things contribute to this.
- Don't expect overnight miracles. For some people it takes weeks or even months before they notice a difference. Some people don't notice any difference at all, then they stop using it and Wham!, they realize that it actually had been doing a whole lot of good.
- Leaks are really only a problem if they are the reason you are waking up at night. Don't worry about it!

And most importatntly....DON'T LOOK AT THE CLOCK! If it has lighted numbers, turn it away from your field of vision. Looking at the clock only creates anxiety.

Hang in there,

Daniel
Thanks Daniel. I just tried pushing the left and right buttons. It told me there was no data. Does the data card have to be in the machine all the time? I thought it was just like a flash drive that you uploaded the data on the card and that the machine held the info. oops....

You don't understand--I want an overnight miracle :>D I hate being tired at 3:30 every day, counting the minutes until I get home, then watching the clock until 7:30 so I can go to bed without feeling TOO guilty.

I know it will take time, I will hang in there. :>D

I just looked up the ResMed Smaart Data feature for the AutoSet on line. My machine shows PRESS:NO DATA for all of the categories except 35 hours used. What happened? Why is there no data being recorded?

Try pressing the Left and Right buttons and holding for 4-5 seconds. See if Efficacy Data appears in the LCD screen. If it doesn't then access to the advanced patient menu hasn't been turned on. But it might have been and if so you will be able to give us some data to better answer any question you may have.

If access was turned on then it is a simple matter of Left button to Enter, Right button to Exit, Up button to return to the previous screen, Down button to proceed to the next screen. You can NOT accidentally or intentionally change your therapy settings from this advanced patient menu.

Usually, we patients (not necessarily the pros) would recommend setting your APAP at 1-2 cms below your titrated pressure and 1-2 cms above your titrated pressure so if your titrated pressure had been 11 cms then 8 to 15 wouldn't be too far outta the ball park.

Rather than unsettling your nasal pillows fit to see if the Autoset is providing pressure, just open your mouth. THAT will tell you if there is any pressure from your Autoset.

I would think that if you were on a pressure of 11 csm w/the Escape that it is a bit odd that your pressure range on the Autoset is 6- 8 cms. It would make more sense if it were 6 cms to 18 cms. Then I'd say they didn't have a whole lot of fatih in the titration and were using the Autoset w/that range to find just what pressure you do need.
Judy, there is no Efficacy data. I get the screen just fine but it reads NO DATA. How do I get this information to be turned on? Do I have to get my DME to do it? Geeeze.

You have to access that advanced patient menu before noon each day. These xPAPs have an internal, twentyfour hour, noon to noon clock. At noon the previous night's data is rolled over into the total averages.

Nope you only have to put the data card in the AutoSet when you want to download some data. I'm not exactly sure w/the S8 IIs, w/their forerunner S8s you wanted to do a download every 4-5 days so as not to miss any night's detailed data.
Thanks. I will check the screen first thing in the morning. Sorry for all the posts, I thought the post was gone so I re-entered it, with so many posts makes me look like I am sort of wigged out....smiles! Well, I guess I AM wigged out. :>D

No problem as long as you get the answers. Getting those answers in the important thing.
I got my numbers from lastnight:
Hours Used: 7.52
Day: 8
Leak: .00L/S
AHI: 2.5
AI: 0.1
HI: 2.4

What do you think? I am still not fully understanding the numbers so your help would be appreciated. Boy, this is a great CPAP machine!
Wow! Look at that leak! Zero! WooHoo! AHI = 2.5! I think when you wrote Day:8; it was probably the 05th percentile pressure for the day.

You're off to a great start. Keep it up!

Daniel, THANKS for answering...YEA. You said this and I don't know what it means--"""I think when you wrote Day:8; it was probably the 05th percentile pressure for the day.""" ?? That my average pressure through the night was 8? Or?

Thanks as always, what a relief to know things are working. I LOVE my nasal pillows mask, I am a side sleeper and it still seems to stay on fine. Who knew a big nose with big old nares would come in handy some day? Smiles.

I meant 95th percentile, but I had a typo. It isn't the average pressure, but rather the pressure that solves your respiratory problems 95% of the time. Another way to think of it is as a recommendation. If you were using a fixed pressure CPAP device, it is suggesting that it should be set to a pressure of 8 cmH2O.
