My CPAP has arrived...not impressed...
OK after waiting almost 7 months I finally have my titrate machine for 10 days, when that goes back I get my permanent device.
As expected it took me ages to get off to sleep last night, I had to take 10mg diazepam to get me off, I woke up at half 6 (I'm normally up at about 8.30) and didn't feel as tired as I normally would from having less sleep but I certainly didn't feel any more energetic. Less tired but not energetic.
This afternoon I had a sleep (yep, still tired in the afternoon) but I had so much trouble getting off - I'd start to drift off but then I'd wake up with an intake of breath - a bit like a large sigh - what was that all about?

Don't give up Russ! You will get used to it. Try wearing it for a little while during the day while you are awake. This will help you get acclimated to it. Did you get any info on your local A.W.A.K.E. group?

I have no idea what an AWAKE group is.
Any ideas what was causing me to take a 'sigh' so often when using the titrate? And why woould I still be feeling tired after using it? Is that normal?

Hello Russ, AWAKE is your local sleepguide. CPAP users just like your self. They usually meet once a month. Sometimes they will have local doctors, DMEs, or even CPAP reps talk or give demos. This link will help you find your local group. Good luck.

I am not sure what your sigh is. It could just be an affect of your body getting used to the machine. I am sure you will get some other responses on this subject very soon.

So I take it you are not Canadian either? LOL. Well where are you and I will see if I can find something through my hospital search engine. I could have sworn that apnea was only a North American problem.

I just spoke to the Sleep Unit at the hospital i had the device from and they suggested the 'sigh' might be something to do with central obstruction. He also advised against using diazepam as that could make the titrate work harder and give a false reading.

That makes sense. I had not heard that centrals would cause a sigh. I will see if I can look that info up thanks. Not sure if this link will help you. I could not understand it because of the accent.

My second night with the CPAP, this time I had a full night's sleep but I'm still feeling just as sleepy this morning as ever...

Russ, just being able to sleep with it on all night is a HUGE accomplishment for anyone getting started with CPAP, let alone someone using it on his 2d night. Terrific! About the feeling of sleepiness, the process of your brain's adaptation to the machine may be causing your sleep to be just as or almost as fragmented as it would be were you not on the machine. That said, this too shall pass. Give it time. You aren't in a position to judge much after night 2.

Oh my God!!! I've heard about cases like yours before! You need to be titrated by a human not a machine. This should be against the Law!!!! I get at least 3 patients a month who have done what you are doing. Good luck. This is not the way to get your pressure.
