I've noticed a reluctance on the part of sleep professionals to recommend Melatonin supplements to their patients as a way to induce sleep. Anyone know if this is thought to be harmful?

I have heard that the studies vary as to whether a synthetic melatonin is very effective. Not sure what the long term effects are either.
My understanding is that since it is not under the domain of the FDA, you can't be sure of the dosage you are getting, no matter what it says on the label. In addition, there is no strong agreement on what the correct dosage should be.
