Limiting Night-Time Computer Use: Sleep Reports Sought

Kate, God bless her, started a thread concerning the effects of computer monitors on sleep. The thread got so long that I decided that it might be helpful to start a new thread so that those of us who try cutting back on using our computers in the evening can report on our experience.

Here the link if you want to read the original thread.

Before detailing my sleep results, let me mention that several times since my June 2011 diagnosis I had a few very good nights of sleep. The handful stuck out in my mind. After reading the thread, I realized those handful of good-sleep nights had one thing in common: I was away from home and therefore wasn't using my computer into the evening and night.

I decided that an early turn-off was worth a try.

Here's my sleep report:

First night:  I turned off the computer at 9:00 pm. and went to bed at midnight.

Result: Better night of sleep. Not great, but better.

Second night (last night): I was away from home from 3:00 pm on and didn't turn on my computer when I returned. I also made it a point to lower all lights from 10:00 pm, including while reading, and was sleepy enough to go to bed a little after 11:00 pm. I read in bed for a while in bed using a Kindle and the light from a red -- yes, a red -- light bulb.

Result:  I had a very good night of sleep without wake-ups to go to the bathroom. (Typically, I wake at least once.) In addition, I had several vivid dreams. I also feel better than usual this morning.

To be sure, two nights prove nothing; for now, they're data points. That said, I'm going to keep at it for a while and it would be great to hear from others. Are you sleeping better after limiting evening and night use of your computer?
