I know that some of you are wanting more information about whether your kids might have Sleep Apnea. Check out this video that you might find helpful. Sleep Apnea is massively underdiagnosed in children, and can be confused for ADHD or other disorders, as the video explains.

My daughter's previous psychiatrist is the first psychiatrist on the board of sleep disorders in Colorado. Before she would even consider putting her on ADD medication, she had her get a sleep study. I was impressed. I had no clue that Sleep apnea and ADD had the same symptoms. I now explain that to everyone. The unfortunate thing is all it did was delay getting her on much needed medication, because she, like her mother had BOTH. Thankfully after they did a septoplasty on the dd, her next PSG came back normal.

I did however do another PSG on her not long after I started my job, mostly because she is now having insomnia thanks to puberty, but also so I could get practice hooking up a pediatric. Drs are now being required to have patients that don't have a history of strep, to have a PSG prior to having tonsils out. We are doing more and more studies on children. I think we are going to start seeing it more.

MTV is doing a segment on their show True Life next month in February called I can't Sleep. They have 3 different people across the country that they are going to be following. (I only know this, because I am the sleep tech doing the study on the teen in Colorado) They are finding different things going on with teens and kids that effect their sleep. Messing with sleep messes with everything!!!

In children, sleep apnea can cause hyperactivity, poor school performance, and aggressiveness. Children who have sleep apnea also may have unusual sleeping positions, bedwetting, and may breathe through their mouths instead of their noses during the day.
