I would be willing to bet that this is one of the best AWAKE groups in the country!
thanks, Rock -- we have a lot going for us in being truly patient-led, and having access to Dr. Park, Dr. Rapoport, j n k and other smart folks in and around the NY area to contribute and participate in the meetings. our own j n k is often an attendee of the meetings, and had the following review of the very first meeting which he posted to cpaptalk:

"Wow!

Mike (member of this board and founder of sleepguide.com) did a fantastic job as director of the A.W.A.K.E. patient support group meeting tonight. I was blown away. I don't know how it could have gone better. Of course, any time you get more than 50 New Yorkers passionate on any subject all in the same room without a fist fight breaking out, you can call that a success. But this room contained experienced CPAP users, newly-diagnosed users, non-compliant former users, DME owners, equipment-manufacturer reps, RTs, dentists, sleep doctors, and the executive director of the ASAA, all on the same page and discussing many of the important issues in two short hours.

Mike put everyone at ease right away by setting an easy-going, low-key, California-tinged tone, speaking seemingly extemporaneously, with open collar and sandles, as he told the story of why he wanted to get the Manhattan group going again. He mentioned his site, the ASAA site, and cpaptalk.com all in the same sentence as three good places for patients to get more knowledge and help.

Mr. Grandi (ASAA executive director) was on point with the importance of putting the patient first as he gave a nice overview of OSA that was informative to everyone in the room--CPAP newbie and professional alike. He kept eveyone's attention with an energy and a focus that were both professional and homey at the same time. It was very nice seeing him there.

Dr. Park spoke informatively but in simple terms on the subject of surgery and a holistic approach to sleep-disordered breathing. He touched on a variety of subjects, hinting that he would be present for more extensive and in-depth considerations of them at future meetings. I hope so. He has a nonassuming charisma that makes his logic as compelling in person as it is in print.

The questions asked there ranged from the simple to the complicated to the mundane to the profound. There was something for everyone. I was amazed at how the professionals were not competitive and were willing to share the limelight. No one pushed an agenda other than the need for patients to be served. It was stunning to see how skillful everyone was at making points without stepping on other toes in the room with such a diverse crowd.

Kudos to Mike, Dr. Park, and Mr. Grandi. That meeting will be a hard act to follow in future months, but I hope the group continues.

Just thought you guys might want to know.

jeff"
