I have successfully and happily been using the Respironics System One Auto-Adjusting CPAP.  Now I see that the ResMed S9 has come on the scene and it looks pretty exciting to me.  Also, some industry insiders are suggesting that I give it a try because of all the special innovations it contains.  My question is whether if I have something that's working for me, should I try the S9 because i might be able to do even better?  Or should I just not rock the boat....

I am soooo jealous that you are able to try the various machine. :)

It seems each machine has different features that make them unique from each other. Like everything there are pros and cons to each machine, depending upon the person. I know you already know what I am talking about. :)

Yet it seems that for many of us we seem to be on a quest to try out new equipment -- so I say if you feel the desire and are able to do it go for it. I am assuming of course that if the machine (S9) doesn't give you the results you want you can switch back to the System One.

You could post your reviews of the different machines here and let us know your thoughts on each one you have tried and used. It would be beneficial for ones that haven't picked up their equipment yet to have a "hands on" review from someone that has used the different machines.
Mike, I'd go for trying the S9. You're not talking about changing settings, which I assume you would keep basically the same, but the newest technology. Although it doesn't have a clock and a cd player it's the machine I would choose given a choice. I have the ResMed S8 VPAP Auto 25 and like it a lot.
ha ha -- not many people will appreciate the inside joke about the Sens-Awake machine, but i'm all over it.

Mike, I agree with Carol that if you can do so without a lot of bother and expense to yourself (read that as "write-off," :-)), your having both machines to compare head-to-head might be a valuable experience for you and to everyone else here. I know I would love to read a detailed review from you on the similarities and differences.

I sure like my S8 because of how easy it is to get useful daily trending data from the screen every morning. When a generous soul from another board allowed me to try an M-series for a month, I found that I got good therapy with it, but my personal preference remained with the S8 for the ease of daily AHI and leak access. The M-series did seem to me to be light-years ahead of the S7 that I had used perviously to owning my S8, but it wasn't as easy for me to use as the S8. So my personal experience has been that the two big companies seem to leap-frog one another with their machines.

I think you should grab one of those SensAwake-thingy machines while yer at it!

Ah, come on Mike, share the insider joke with this Sens-Awake thing! Am I being a dunce? Is it something obvious?

actually, it's not that funny, and no you're not being a dunce. Jnk and i were just kind of shall we say "skeptical" of the benefits of the Sens-Awake technology as they were being played up to us at one AWAKE meeting. see, i have a pretty bizarre sense of humor.

I'm a little confused about the S9- I was reading over the specs and it is listed as a CPAP machine, not available as a BPAP. I know it has the auto feature to find the best pressure for you and I presume there would be a pressure range set by your Doctor. I use the S8 VPAP auto 25 at fixed pressures of IPAP24/EPAP 20 in spontaneous mode. Does this mean at this time I wouldn't be able to use an S9? They also listed operating pressures as 4- 20, which wouldn't be high enough for me, but aside from that can a cpap be set to fixed pressures?
In my dreams I would love to have enough money to buy every machine on the market and try them all. :) It is probably a good thing I am not rich!!! :)
It would be nice to get involved with clinical trials. I guess your doc would have to be involved for you to eligible. Maybe it's worth writing to some of these companies with new machines- the less popular ones, not ResMed or Respironics. The newer companies, or small companies with new machines might want a review on cpap.com.
Mike, how do get this privilage- through your standing in the AWAKE group in your area?

Are you yokin?? If it won't break the bank go for the Resmed and AT LEAST try it out!!!! You think when Resmed comes out w/an S9 VPAP Auto I won't be jumping thru hoops trying to get my grubby little mitts on one??? HA! You bet your bippy I will!!! My ONLY complaint w/this PR S1 BPAP Auto w/Bi-Flex is the crappy EncorePro 2.2 software. Nothing would make me happier than to be able to go back to good ole ResScan software!!!!
Mary -
Saw your discussion and noted you're happy with the S8 VPAP. Do you know if ResMed is going to make an auto VPAP version of the S9? I'm slated to get a new machine, and if the release is eminent then I'll wait. My old Respironics BIPAP has been OK for years. It's my original machine. I'm ready to upgrade to newer technology, though.

My local Resmed Rep told me earlier this year at one of our apnea support group meetings that an S9 VPAP Auto should be released before the end of this year.

I am an AVID Resmed fan - but - the S8 VPAP Auto was released in January 2008 and quickly followed by the S8 VPAP Auto 25. Given past release dates I'm not all that hopeful of an S9 VPAP Auto coming out that soon. Hopefully I am wrong about that but ..... the S8s were released in 2006, and it wasn't until 2008 that they released the S8 VPAP Auto to replace the S7 VPAP Auto. Bi-levels just aren't as needed as straight CPAPs and APAPs.

PR (Respironics), on the other hand, HAS released a PR SystemOne BPAP Auto w/Bi-Flex and offers much of the similar technology such as Central Apnea detection and an improved integrated humidifier, etc. You are most likely better off going w/a PR S1 BPAP Auto than waiting for a Resmed S9 VPAP Auto. As much as I love my Resmeds, and as much as I love my Resmed VPAP Auto, that is what I did. I'm now using the PR S1 BPAP Auto w/Bi-Flex. PLUS PR offers a patient version of their professional software for the PR S1s, EncoreViewer v.2, whilst Resmed is showing no signs of offering a patient version of their professional ResScan software.

I have absolutely NO COMPLAINTS about the therapy this PR S1 BPAP Auto provides. None.
