I've been playing around with the variables that I can play around with and I've tried doing without the humidifier for a night here and there. In both cases, the measured AHI/AI increased significantly. Is this a false correlation or have people found that humidification helps with treatment more than just preventing dryness?

j n k answered it perfectly.

What that does in turn is causes the nasal tissue to become inflamed making nasal respiration very difficult. The mouth opens since this is much easier and the pneumatic splint that your PAP therapy provides goes bye-bye. Upper airway collapses and up goes the AHI/RDI.
