I have a question for those of you that are sleep professionals. When a patient has a sleep study, how long does it take to get the results of the study? I imagine that the test results are completed by the end of the study, first thing in the morning. If my guess is correct, why is there a 2-3 week wait for results?

Thanks.

It depends Bee. There is a pecking order. Some pts are more serious than others. These will get bumped forward of those with less imediate needs. I believe that our lab offers a 10 day turn around.
Rock, I guess I am still confused. So at the end of the night all of the scoring and data is compiled. Right? Then is it digitally sent to the doc for review? I don't understand what exactly takes 10 days. Is it the patient load? Thanks for being patient with my right-brained nature.
It is different at every lab Bee. The test is generally scored or looked at twice for checks and balances. The physicians then interprets Them. This process can take a few days. The sleep Doctor then consorts with the primary care physician. The two of them are supposed to make a decision based on the data. At least in a perfect world that is what's supposed to happen.
Gotcha, thanks. I know we DO live in a perfect world. :>D
Hi BeeAsleep,

It depends on how it takes to be scored by an RPSGT, Dictated by a Sleep specialist, and come back from transcription. The fastest for all that to happen in my area is about 5-7 business days. It's taken as long as 3 weeks though when we're really behind or doctors/staff are on vacation.

It is not typical for the test results to be done by the end of the study. 2-3 day is "normal".

Thanks. This keeps me from being so steamed about not getting results. I appreciate your feedback, there is always another side to the situation.
