Beth sent this message: "Here I am at 4:00 a.m. and have been awake since 3:18 a.m. I cannot go back to sleep at this time of the morning, therefore by 10:00 a.m. I am very tired and looking forward to a good nap after lunch. I usually go back to bed hoping sleep will come so I can get up about 6;30 a.m. but sleep simply does not come so I get up.. If I take a sleeping aid it only makes me sluggish but not sleepy. Of course, I want to eat something to comfort myself which doesn't help my weight problem. I would appreciate any help you can give me on going back to sleep at this early hour. Thanks in advance. Beth"

I have had this problem off and on for years. I was told that it actually is a form of insomnia -- don't know how true that is but a doctor once told me that waking up in the middle of the night and then being unable to go back to sleep was similar.

For me a low dose of antidepressants help. I am unsure why -- or if depression was causing it or what. I can not take Benadryl to sleep as it wires me up and then for sure I am awake pacing the floor like a caged animal. I did try a couple of Ambien years ago and was able to sleep with it, but didn't want to become hooked and so never really tried them beyond the couple I took.

Have you talked to your doctor about this? I would start there and see what they suggest.
Yes, I have talked to my doctor about not being able to go back to sleep. He really hasn't helped me.
I have restless legs so take Mirapex and Klonopin for them. (Parkinson medication) My not being able to go back to sleep upsets my legs. A little warmer than warm shower sometimes helps. My doctor tells me to take 4 Tylenol arthritis
a day. It helps. I find if I stay busy and on my feet I am more comfortable even though I feel very tired.
It seems to take my mind off my pain but does not help the sleep and being able to relax.
Darvoset 100 helps me the most as it kills the pain and I am able to get some rest. I try not to take them unless it is the last straw as I don't want to get hooked on them. I am going back to my doctor this week and will try again to get some help. I can't take Benedryl and the Ambien and Darvoset 100 effects me about the same and are very habit forming.
I really appreciate your reply to my delimmas. Thanks, Beth
I would continue to follow up -- and maybe even get a second opinion. You do not want to become hooked on pain killers as you have stated (and very wisely). Have you tried propping your legs up? I had some horrific back pain that generated down to my legs a few years back and the propping of my legs at night helped (or even a rolled towel under the knees help when the pain is less severe for me).
How are your iron levels? Do you take vitamins? Sometimes people with restless legs can have low iron or some type of vitamin deficiency. Try taking a daily iron pill or increasing your vitamin intake as this may help.

How are your kidneys? Do have a problem with infections. Bladder problems? Urinary tract?
