Thanks to this forum, I felt somewhat educated meeting with DME today. I can't believe she had already picked out everything for me. I insisted on the ResMed apap. It has a built in heated humidifier. She wasn't too happy as she had a Respironics already programmed. I tried the ResMed nasal pillows but they weren't all that comfortable. Then I tried the smallest nasal mask they make: the Fisher Paykel Zest.....ahhhh...perfect (at least for now). But what's up with the Respironics $104 chin strap??? It's a wide piece of elastic with velcro!!! On the web it's $18.99...what's up with that AND why do I rent instead of buy all this equipment??. I have met my insurance deductible for 2009? Wll this be retroactive when I am charged in January, 2010? I have 30 days to change my mask if I want to. Will report on my first night tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Good luck.

If you machine is on rental, probably your deductible will start over in January.

You may check with your insurance and see if the will convert it to a purchase.
Good luck.

Tiara medical has a nice chinstrap for the same price and it can't slide off.

sleepycarol makes an excellent point.

Way to empower yourself. Let us know how it went. I'm always ready for a success story...or at least one in the making.

Good luck Carolyn, please keep us posted on how you do.

My machine was on rental in the initial beginning. I received it at the end of August. In December I found that we were changing insurance companies (with higher copays, deductibles, etc.). I called the insurance company and asked if there was anything I could do so that the machine would convert to a purchase. I was told all I had to do was request it and have the DME bill it that way.

Your insurance may or may not let you convert it to a purchase, but without asking you won't know.
Yep, you will have to take over the rental payments out of pocket until you meet your deductable in 2010 unless you can convince your insurance to do the outright purchase as suggested..

If you like the Zest BECAUSE there is so little of it (I'm definitely in the "less is more" crowd myself), you might want to keep the old Respironics Simplicity simple nasal cushion in mind (you will have to make some adjustments to the large headgear tho). And if you ever opt to go to a full face keep the ProBasics Zzz-Mask in mind (again you will have adjustments to make to the large headgear).

For a chin strap I like Respironics' cheapest, the basic white, (PN 302175 if I remember correctly). It is simply a small, soft chin cradle w/a strap off each end of the cradle to run to the top of your head. It comes w/4 small velcro squares so you can place them strategically on your mask headgear to hold the chin strap in place. This allows some adjustment so the chin strap is not pushing/pulling your lower jaw back as well as stabilizes your mask headgear. The other chin strap I tried, a black one, tended to push my jaw backward and the material irritated my skin. Plus it was rather heavy as compared to the basic white one that I like.
So how did it go last night, Carolyn???
