I have mask problems like that myself. Dr wrote prescription for a new hybrid mask. Perhaps that's the same as what you'll be getting.

if anyone here is using a hybrid mask, please share your thoughts on it. i think it's one that has nasal pillows for the nose, and also a part that covers the mouth.

Simon,
This is Melodie (Mel). I started out using nose pillows, but after a few months they were drying out my nose too much and causing little sores way up in the nostrils. They also leaked air into my eyes and my eyes were staying dried out. I got a new Respironics ComfortGel mask on January 19th and absolutely love it! My nose isn't drying out and no leaks into the eyes. I am NOT a mouth breather, so I don't have any problems with that area. I sleep better now with my nasal gel mask than I have in a long time. It took a little getting used to, but now that I am used to it - I love it!

I think that with any new mask we try, there is going to be an adjustment period of some kind. It's just taking the time to allow yourself to get adjusted that can be frustrating at times. SleepyCarol has tried lots of masks. Maybe she will respond and give you some insight into some of the ones she has tried. She made a list and posted it once, I'm not sure where that list is, but it is here on sleepguide somewhere.

Just don't give up - you will eventually find the mask that works best for you. Just takes a little time my friend.

Thanks for all the information I received I am ok with the soft gel mask that cover only my nose is just when I am asleep apparently I breathe thru my mouth too, causing my mouth and throath to be supper dry.... It happaned to my sister in law and she had the same mask and now she has one that cover nose and mouth and she is super happy..... I got it order should receive it soon....

I also have the Gel Mask although find that I can only wear it 3-4 hrs a night. My machine has water in it and from what I understand I am the only one in my county that has one like this. Yea my mouth also gets SUPER dry as well. Lately though I have another problem. I have sinus problems living here in Arkansas and that of course does not allow me to wear my mask at all simply because I cannot breath through my nose. I am afraid to sleep because of the fact that I am not using my machine.

Which machine are you using? Many of the machines now have intergrated humidifiers. The M series machines by Respironics have it on the side in an enclosed, but seperate compartment. You can not see the water chamber on the M series but have to open a door to remove the chamber to fill it. If you didn't know that it was actually a separate chamber you would think it was made directly with the cpap.

If you are breathing through your mouth, ie. the super dry mouth and throat you will have to find a way to keep your mouth closed. Many use chin straps. There are a ton of different ones out there and finding one that works can be very tricky. Another solution is to tape your mouth or use Polident strips to seal it. Use sensitive tape so that it doesn't irritate your skin. For all those that are going to jump on the bandwagon and say it is dangerous -- are you (and if you are a DME you should be) aware that the FDA has approved a mouth mask named Oracle? It seals the mouth completely and you plug your nose to keep from breathing through it. It is much more difficult to remove the Oracle than it is a piece of tape. Turn over the edge of the tape for a quick release pull.

As far as sinus issues go, have you tried any thing to clear it up? Many, including myself, find that once I have the air blowing it sort of clears my sinuses and am able to use the machine. I live in Missouri. Use a Neti-pot or a NeilMed sinus rinse (it is a squeeze bottle) and many of your sinus problems should clear up. Either can be purchased at your local WalMart or Walgreens.

You might try turning down the humidifier a little to see if that helps with congestion as well. I find if I have it too high it clogs me. In fact, I typically use my humidifier in passover mode (meaning the unit is turned off but does have water in it).
