from a CPAP user:

Question: I was fitted for a nose mask and breath essentially through my mouth. The mask does not seem to be working and I have gagged with it. Anyone with similar experience?

Holy Jeepers, Batman, (cleaned up expletive) the medical profession can't get the simplest things right. If you breathe through your mouth, even part time, you need a full face mask. Nasal masks don't work properly for mouth breathing.
You almost always need a chinstrap with the nasal pillow masks, it keeps your jaw from dropping due to relaxation. It has to be a sealed system, if your mouth opens, it defeats the purpose of a nasal pillow mask.
They make a couple dozen chinstraps, so you'll have to experiment. Anyone who knows of a "breakthrough" chinstrap, please let us know. I'm always on the lookout.
Gordon, I think the reason you are always on the lookout for a breakthrough chinstrap is because chinstraps don't work well for most people. For me they interfere with the mask headgear and are uncomfortable and too warm. Also, they must be very tight to keep the jaw of mouthbreathers closed. Then the pressue may still leak through the lips making the CPAP therapy useless.

I find it easier to just put a short narrow vertical strip of tape over the lips. This holds my jaw shut, but leaking through the lips can still be a problem at times.

However, the best solution is to use a full face mask.
I agree with Banyon -- chin straps generally don't work very well.
