At our local AWAKE meeting last night, the Respironics rep there said dryness was the number 1 complaint among CPAP users.   I didn't expect that -- thought it would be mask leak or mask fitting or mouth breathing.

My own #1 complaint is mouth breathing.  What is everyone's else's?

As to mouth dryness, there are special products in the dental section of the drugstore for dry mouth.  Toothpaste, mouthwash, gel you place in your mouth to dissolvove night.  You may need all of these.  It's worth a try.  Good luck.

been doing some research on the cloth mask myself and from what i have seen and heard the cloth mask does not work very well, excessive leaks . i am in search of the of the perfect mask myself and saw the cloth mask and thought this may work but asking for advise on sleepguide it does not work well .

Definitely issues with the mask. I love the new FP Forma mask that goes under the chin - great for mouth breathers! However, I have to have my mask so tight to stop leaks that I'm now getting small sores on my cheeks beside my nose. They look almost like pimples. I've tried putting some soft fleece between my mask and those spots. It helps with the irritation, but then I have leak problems. I can't seem to win. Would love to hear more about this cloth mask that Liz mentioned - sounds intriguing!
I know just what you mean about the neck discomfort.  I does go away after being up a few minuts.  And I have been trying some yoga and getting a Thai massage weekly.

face sweat... I have remedied this with putting a handkerchief with a hole cut in it between me and the mask and have no more issues with this. this also helps with leaking .. you don't hear the hissing noise if you roll over and offset your mask.. I still get plenty of air but no noise and no wet face causing rash.
My number one complaint at the moment is my Remstar Auto M Series A-Flex water leaking. Two nights in a row the whole table was covered in water and my nose completely dry. I don't think the seal is fitting properly when I insert the water tank.

I also wish I could find comfortable headgear. My neck is sore each morning from the strap in the lower back of my head.
Mike C, did the doctors tell you the tubes would be for life?  As I understand it they eventually fall out and don't need to be replaced.  We all have to do things we don't like for our health.  SInce you ear infections have not cleared up on six weeks without APAP therapy I wonder if they are unrelated.  You don't trust these specialists?  See another one in another practice, if possible.  Best wishes for your recovery.  I wouldn't wish an earache on my worst enemy.
Mike, I did not think ear tubes caused many problems?  Maybe you should give it a shot?

Mike C, ok, I get it now.  Good luck.

Oh, Banyon, I so agree with you!

If the market were open, really open, there would be so much more available to us and for us.

Regulation.

CPAP equipment needs to be OTC.

I like to buy the latest models and would like to sell my used like-new-condition machines on ebay. This would give a robust, economical market for machines and would allow people to trade up to newer technology at a low price.

New machines could be sold at department stores and discount retailers. The public could walk in without appointments and look at the machines while comparing quality, features and cost. Awareness would go up and social stigma would go down!

The same goes for hoses, masks, filters, etc.

The CPAP market is going to become huge and we need to have an efficient way to distribute the new products and the used products.

I am wanting to purchase some more equipment now but am holding off because the regulators have prevented an efficient market.
And I would be first in line if custom made masks became available !!!!!!!

I should have specified custom masks that were readily available.  And not just nasal masks!

Custom masks are available in the US now.  They were started by an Australian Company and there are two cities in the US who make the molds and the masks.  They are very expensive, I believe around $1,500 or more.  I would have to do some googling to find the company.  This is the website for the AU cmpany- perhaps they could direct you to sites in the US.  They are nasal only masks, I believe.  http://www.acurest.com.au is the AU company.

Hi Mary. I actually changed my insurance & health plans to get the BEST doctors in the Southwest (so we are told?). My pumonologoist is actually the President of Scripps Hospital! So off we went on a 2 month journey of over 75 MORE X Rays, 2 CT scans, another MRI etc.....The result? NOTHING! I have now switched back to my original health plan (Still Scripps but on the Coast) so no more 3 hour+ round trip drives with my wife missing work to drive me all over San Diego.....

I was told I would need the tubes ALWAYS. And since I just go another ear ache on week 6 without PAP, I am lost. But I am not going to ANY doctor. I just flat quit. They use me as their personal ATM machine, radiate me with NO regard to my welfare, when I protest they insist so I finally told them to "buzz off" and did so with a few 4 letter words and walked out when they ordered yet MORE CT scans etc.

Remember they wanted to do everything from angioplasty to a pacemaker for my heart? That was just the beginning and NOT needed! Now they want to do more spinal surgery yet say the damage is not reversible? I have had enough, I will live or die but let nature do it on IT'S Schedule. I feel like a million bucks just since saying goodbye to all the idiots in the medical profession. I honestly am so much more at peace now with NO more fighting PAP, doctors, hoping for better tomorrows, the next big plan etc. I am simply free. Had I gone on I would be another headline of a man gone nuts with a gun seeking revenge. Just NOT worth it.

My biggest complaint is the need for a chin strap. Without it, I breathe through my mouth. With it, I have these ugly marks on my neck and chin for hours after I wake up. My mask is perfect (it's a nasal-style mask) and the headgear is great.

I find myself delaying going to bed at night because of the fight to get the chin strap tight enough to work and yet loose enough so that I don't feel like I'm being strangled.

I wonder if the Ultimate Chin Strap (you could google for it) would work for you? I've used it and don't get any marks on my body.

If you're a woman, take the smaller size.

Hope this helps. And GOOD LUCK!!
