This article brought to my attention a drop ship service from Respironics that I didn't know existed: http://www.rtmagazine.com/news/2009-09-10_01.asp

But it makes it sounds as if it's a way for physicians to send supplies directly to the patient without the intermediary of the Durable Medical Equipment company. Is that the goal? To cut DMEs out of the business model? I'd tend to doubt it.

I read it too, Mike.

I've read of first time CPAP patients getting their introduction to ther equipment this way. Drop shipping a renwed mask or hose or other accessories is one thing - but - new xPAP and accessories to a first time patient???? Yet it happens.
this is different, though, Judy. i knew about drop shipping equipment from the DME to the patient. What is new to me is drop shipping from the manufacturer to the patient at the physician's request, thereby cutting the DME out altogether. could that be?

I was just assuming that was directed at sleep doctors whose sleep clinic also supplies the PAPs and accessories, Mike.
I think that kind of situation is the exception to the rule because anti-kickback laws prevent the doctor from diagnosing and selling the supplies, at least with respect to Medicare patients.

Yes, definitely that is the exception rather than the rule but given the size of this country there are quite a few nonetheless. Mayo Clinic's CPAP Shop is on the 17th floor of the Gonda Building, the same floor w/the sleep lab and doctor's consult offices.
