As long as I could remember I was only able to breathe through my right nostril -- I thought that was how everyone breathed.  It never occurred to me that you could/should be able to breathe through the left side of your nose.

I started getting daily migraines and to make a long story short I was diagnosed with a deviated septum in 1990.  After numerous test and discussions with the doctor I decided to go ahead and have it fixed.

The doctor at that time happened to be the chief of the ENT unit of a large univesity teaching hospital and suppose to be the best doctor in the midwest.  The surgery was supposed to be routine and done as an outpatient.  In my case it didn't work out that way and it turned out to be one of the worst experiences I have ever had.  I had major blood loss and ended up in the hospital for several days afterward.

I have been having some issues with my sinus and on Friday the doctor told me she wants to refer me to a specialist cause when my granddaughter broke my nose in May 2011 apparently it caused my septum to deviate again.

I don't think that is a road I am going down again.  I realize there have been medical advances since then, but I really don't think I can do it over again.

Good luck, sleepycarol, whatever you decide to do.  Keep us posted.

Hi carol, My surgery really was NOT bad.  One night in hospital. Surgery was on Thursday and Stents were removed Monday or Tuesday. I was So dreading the removal and there really was NO pain.  Now I continued to have varying degrees of stuffiness (you go through cycles, or the interior of your nose does!) Even now, three months down the road I had occasional stuffiness on same left side as before. But shorter duration.  So I would do it again if I needed.  Hope this helps.  I only used Percocet for pain for about 2 nights after the surgery.  Really was very little pain, just uncomfortable having stopped up nose for 4 days until stents removed.
