In January of 2006 I finally succumbed to my wife's relentless requests to get a sleep study. I had been an incredibly loud snorer for over a decade; and was always tired. Additionally, I was often irritable and even depressed. The sleep study results showed that I was waking up over 100 times an hour. Essentially, I had not been in deep sleep for over a decade. I have severe sleep apnea.

This condition had been a strain on my happiness, marriage, parenting, career and health for years. In February of 2006 I began using a CPAP device. It immediately had countless positive effects in my life, including:
+ Real sleep for me and my wife
+ More energy to exercise
+ Happiness, no more depression
+ Focus improved significantly at work
+ More patience helped me be a better husband and father
+ All these changes improved my home life and career significantly

If my story reminds you of your life or that of someone you love, please do all you can to get a sleep study done. Life deserves to be better.

Just wanted to share my story. I have been using Cpap for a few months now, and I have mixed experiences. I find it hard to use the masks, both full mask and the nasal mask. With the full mask I always get an itch and it is cumbersome to scratch the itch with the full-face mask. With the nasal mask I do not have the same problem with itching (it is probably just in the mind), but I have to work with myself to use the mask all night. One thing that bothers me is that it starts to leak after some time during the night, so I’ll wake up due to this. But I guess this is all something I will be able to sort out after getting used to it. I still sometimes allow myself to sleep a night without the mask, and it feels like a relief when I go to bed.
But, and this is the important part for me. When I use the mask all night, and when I am able to use it for several nights in row, I do feel so much better. I am less irritated, the wife has commented on this. So there is no discussing that the Cpap has had a tremendous effect on life quality for me, and I guess this will increase as I continue to use it.
One of the things that are able to motivate me is the use of Encore Viewer software (a scaled down version of Encore Pro) (I am using an REMstar).. This gives me all the vital statistics from my CPAP unit, being a computer nerds (and computer gamer) these numbers give me an added interest as I like to see good numbers in the rapport. Good nights in a row gives me the same satisfaction as a new high score :)
What to learn? Keep at it, find out what works for you, and there is improved life quality for you in it.
