CPAP Filter Was Disgusting
My wife swapped out her CPAP Filter tonight -- the little white disposable one for the M-Series Respironics unit she has. It's supposed to be white!

The Resmeds can be set to flash a Reminder on the LCD screen when its time to check or change your filter. I have mine set for once a month because of having had a furnace add-on woodburner for so many years sending all the gunk thru the furnace ducts.

I don't even use the white filter myself because the patient manual said their use is "optional". I only use the foam black filters. Now I'm reconsidering. . .

Is that white filter not a HEPA filter? I wish ResMed had that. I've been considering getting the in-line filter they offer, probably will now. And yes, a dog seems to emanate a lot of small dust like particles, at least my black lab does, though he does get out often.

HEPA is the acronym for "High Efficiency Particulate Air". According to Wikipedia: HEPA filters, by definition, remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 microns and larger. I see Respironics calls that little white filter on the back of their machine a "Ultra Fine" filter. The in-line filters are true HEPA filters. The difference is the surface area of the filter is much larger. I'm gonna get me one of those, thanks for sending me on this search.

Mike how long had the filter been in use?
Since I have so many allergy issues I change mine often.

Smoke tends to yellow, well brown, filters is why I asked, Mike. What about a fireplace?
Yikes!!! 4 months?? Maybe I should get the in-line HEPA filter for my VPAP Auto!!! AND check for the white filter on this PR S1 I'm using! I change my regular VPAP Auto filter once a month just because of having had a furnace add-on woodburner for some 20 years and no faith in the duct cleanings. They never look bad, BUT ... w/7 indoor/outdoor cats, 3 of which are longhairs, and 2 hairy indoor/outdoor dogs .... those filters have collected a bit in a month.
The first time I checked my Resmed filter it had been after about 3 months of use and it was dusty but not so bad as your wife's white filter. It was enough tho that that is when I started changing once a month. I wish the Respironics regular filters weren't black!!!

I once had a pt come in with a 15 year old Resmed. I do not think that he had ever cleaned it. Him and his wife both smoked in the house. He used tap water in the humidifier. The machine was encrusted with a yellow salt like substance. The filter fell apart in my hands. Grossest thing I have ever seen.
