I just started with CPAP on July 10, 2009 and every morning I wake up feeling awful! I've been trying to figure out why I don't feel better and I think I might have come up with a possible answer. Does anyone know how the drugs clonazepam and alprazolam might affect how I feel in the morning? I talked with the pharmacist and he told me both of these medicines are tranquilizers, which I did not know.
My former doctor prescribed both of these medications for me and I never questioned him what the side effect might be. I want to feel better after cpap, not worse.

I do believe I would talk to a competent physician about these drugs and sleep apnea.

Alprazolam supresses both Stage n3 and REM sleep while decreasing stage n1 and increasing stage n2. It will increase your sleep latency, but may also increase your apneas.
Clonazepam supresses REM and decreases stage n2 while increasing stage n3.
the one positive that both of these drugs have is that they will decrease leg movements. Both have negitive effects on REM sleep. Alpra may keep you from getting any deep sleep at all.

Can I assume then that my sleep apnea is being adversely affected by these medications? I want OFF these drugs, but I don't know how to go about it.

i don't think it is safe to assume anything when measuring the effects of drugs on an individual person. I can't say for sure if it is effecting your apnea because I did not see what your AHI was before or after you started PAP therapy and/or the drugs, If you are using your CPAP l;ike you are supposed to and still waking up tired I would bring this to the attention of my PCP. he knows more about you then I do.
