Be careful of anecdotal information. For some people, chinstraps are great. For others, they do nothing at all. From my experience, I think there are two basic types of mouth-breathers - those that habitually breathe through their mouth, and those who breathe through their mouth because it is difficult to breathe through the nose. If you can't breathe through your nose, then strapping your mouth shut isn't going to help anything, and you're better off with a full face mask, unless extra humidification helps you to breathe through your nose better.
For habitual mouthbreathers, chinstraps can help, if you find one that stays on your head. Some people only need a chinstrap for a few months to retrain themselves, while others use it as a permanent solution. Sometimes, the chinstrap holds the jaw in place, but air still flutters from the lips. While some people tape their mouths shut, this is NOT RECOMMENDED unless your doctor advises you to do so.
In my oipinion, the critical factor with mouth-breathing is whether or not you are able to make it through the night undisturbed. If you are waking up because of the sound of the leak or due to a dry mouth or throat, then you must do something about it. If it doesn't bother you too much, it may be easier to declare victory and move on. Unless your data-capapble device shows an unacceptably high leak rate that impacts its ability to reliably tell if you are breathing or not, it may be more throuble than its worth to fix the problem.

"Chin-Up" strips work very well for me. I use a Somnodent MAS dental device and without using the strips, my mouth is left open. At first I thought the strips were just another scam but after a few attempts at getting the fit just right, I have to say they do a wonderful job of keeping my mouth closed.

bigsky, i've never heard of "Chin-Up" strips. Could you post some more info/ pictures of the product for us?

I don't know if this will help, but I have had some good luck with this mask with tru mouth breathers in my lab. If you switch back and forth from mouth to nose it will not work.

Chin-Up Strips look pretty good -- maybe this is just the ticket for my on and off mouth breathing issues, especially when i'm congested.
