While walking my dog last week, I met a lady with a chihuahua who seemed to be very protective of her owner. I remarked it and she explained that indeed she's a "watchdog" that was provided to her by some medical or social services to protect her from sleep apnea. The chihuahua sleeps on her owner's chest and when the owner stops breathing, the dog pushes against her face and licks her to wake her up.

I loved the story but I did not find anything related to it on the web. I don't have any reason not to believe the person, though; she showed me the ID plate for the dog that was provided to her by the social services.

Is it common to train chihuahuas against sleep apnea? Maybe it's a local experiment: I live in Sebastopol, about an hour north of San Francisco. Would you be interested in more details if I met the lady again?

holy cow, Piet, this is my favorite post ever! i have a chihuahua terrier mix, so i'm partial to the little guys to begin with.

sounds pretty plausible.

i'm down in menlo park on the peninsula. please do respond with all the details.
I am interested in this story as well.

I have heard about dogs being trained in areas other than just for the blind. We had a friend once that couldn't get around very well and was afraid of falling. She didn't want a wheelchair, but did use a cane. She had a dog that helped her steady her balance. Was pretty amazing to see them together.
Yes, there are "service dogs" trained to help people w/a variety of disabilities. Some few dogs can detect the onset of a seizure before it begins. some few dogs can detect a diabetes crisis before it happens. However, it would be the heighth of STUPIDITY to train a dog to sleep ON anyone's chest, much less on the chest of an apnean!!!!
Sort of seems like it's not so much of a cure as aggravating the condition...Having trouble sleeping? Here, I'll shout at you every time it looks like you might be about to wake up...If there's a health component her medical/social services were hoping for in giving her a wee puppy I suspect it was in the expectation she'd take it out for a walk every day...
Just saying...

maureen (I have a Yorkshire terrier and a CPAP so I get to go for a walk each day and sleep through the night...)
I agree. The dog itslef has become an arousal disorder, which in correlation with apnea would seem to make for a RUFF night of sleep.
