I noticed I sleep better if I sleep on my side with a breathe rite strip.  anyone else have experience with this?

makes perfect sense.  the breathe right strip keeps the nostrils from collapsing, thereby helping to keep the nasal passages open and sleeping on your side improves the chances that the soft tissue in your throat won't collapse due to the force of gravity.  removing those obstructions improves your chances to sleep without the fragmentation caused by the fight or flight response of not being able to breathe properly.
