If you have problems with insomnia (in addition to sleep apnea) I can highly recommend Barry Krakow's Sound Sleep, Sound Mind.
I read the book before my SA diagnosis. Indeed, Dr., Krakow writes about sleep apnea: when I read what he had to say, all I could think to myself was "Thank God I don't have that sleep condition! It would be awful!". I laugh every time I think about that.
However, having been diagnosed with SA and now sleeping (happily) with my CPAP blowing pressurized air through my mask to keep me breathing, I found that I have the frustrating problem of sleep maintenance insomnia, i.e., I can't stay asleep. I fall asleep just fine, but I wake after about three or four hours and then often -- usually -- can't go back to sleep.
I'm almost (but not quite) as tired every day as I was before I started sleeping with my CPAP.
The good news: I picked up my copy of SOUND SLEEP, SOUND MIND and re-read it with a different mindset. Bingo! I get the reasons I'm not sleeping through the night and, best of all, Dr. Krakow offers actionable help and advice that really works for an insomniac.
The information in this book has been a real gift to me. I want to share it by letting you all know about it.
