I just read on NPR that the first report from the medical examiner showed he had an enlarged heart and that was likely the cause of his death. http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2009/06/billy_mays_heart_appear...

An enlarged heart is one of the characteristics that often appear in those with sleep apnea. It sounds as if he may have died in his sleep from the news articles I've seen.

Untreated apnea the true culprit here? I don't know if we'll ever know, but it sure makes me want to make sure my mom stays compliant with her cpap!

want to point out that Billy Mays didn't appear obese, which raises my suspicion level even higher:

Which suspicion, Mike -- for or against apnea as a factor?
for apnea as a factor. because people think that folks like myself, who are young and slim looking, are "normal" -- then one day we mysteriously drop dead of a cardiac related event. my suspicion level is that in those cases, untreated apnea is often the culprit.

That's what I was thinking too. And that he died in his sleep it seems. I don't think we'll ever find out, but it's scary stuff.
