I read Dr. Krakow's SOUND SLEEP, SOUND MIND and grasped the concept about slowing brainwave activity for better sleep. I found myself not able to sleep through the night, so Dr. Krakow's book was quite enlightening.

Terry Vella, a poster on this site, chimed it to point out that sleep apnea is actually a breathing disorder, not a sleepdisorder. Great clarification!  This explains why I'm not sleeping through the night (I have sleep maintenance insomnia) BUT at least am sleeping when I'm sleeping, thanks to my beloved CPAP.

I followed Dr. Krakow's protocol to help slow my brain wave activity. It seemed like a bit of an effort, although it was helping, UNTIL I figured out a much, much better approach for me, one that's absolutely delightful, too:  I spend about a half hour before bedtime watching YouTube videos of adorable animals. I smile, sometimes laugh out loud, and end up feeling really good, really relaxed and really happy as I head off to bed.

I now try to break up my day two or three times with a few minutes of delighful watching. It's  working! I'm sleeping for longer stretches AND falling back to sleep quite readily if I wake for a bathroom break. Of course, when I attempt to resume sleep after a wake-up, I recall some of my favorite videos: I'm convinced the imagining slows my brain wave activity which helps me dip back into sleep.  It's WONDERFUL!

Maybe my experience will help someone else. To get started, below are a few favorite videos. If you try this approach, you'll uncover some of your own favorites so for now, consider these as "starters":

Zollistar, what a good idea!  The music is nice and relaxing on some of them.

Apnea is not a breathing disorder. It actually has very little to do with pulmonary function short of causing O2 desaturations. Sleep apnea is a neuromuscular sleep disorder. Central sleep a[nea is a breathing disorder.

Thanks for the clarification, Rock.

Not a problem, Z. It's important to know and can take a minute to wrap your head around. I know it did for me. Very few sleep disorders fall into a "breathing disorder" catagory.
