Are you tired in the morning? Is waking up difficult? HappyWakeUp® gives you an optimal wake up every morning!

HappyWakeUp® is the first, genuine smart alarm clock based on medical research of the human sleep and its structure (patents pending 2007-2009). The application is the result of a Finnish study conducted in the Tampere University of Technology and the University of Helsinki.

HappyWakeUp® monitors your sleep using the mobile phone microphone. It makes statistical analysis of the quality of your sleep, detecting the natural sleep cycles and the optimal wake up moments in the morning. During these moments your body and brain is ready to wake up naturally and without any extra stress.

Conventional smart alarm clocks are expensive and cumbersome devices, such as movement detectors called actigraphs. Actigraphs have to be physically attached to you like a watch or a wrist band, which usually disturb your sleep. In addition, actigraphs have to be carried with you while traveling and may include batteries that are difficult to change and obtain. HappyWakeUp® is conveniently always with your personal mobile phone and is extremely easy to use: just set the alarm and place the mobile phone near you during night!

The human sleep consists of different stages of sleep (see attached hypnogram screenshot). If you are forced to wake up during deep sleep (Stages 2-4) or during REM sleep, you find it difficult because your brain is not ready to wake up. In addition to the unpleasant experience, this also causes extra stress to your body, your heart, and your nervous system!

During the last morning hours your sleep is more fragmented and there are short periods of wakefulness called arousals. Arousals are typically so short that you do not remember them in the morning. They are, however, the optimal moments for your brain and body to wake up, and HappyWakeUp® is specifically developed to detect these moments!

HappyWakeUp® has been introduced in several magazines (e.g., Der Spiegel, Finnish Science, and The Morning News) and has already gained wide popularity among Nokia mobile phones!

For a free, lite version of HappyWakeUp®, please see the HappyNap application in an App Store near you!

looks very promising. as a sleep tech, what do you make of these types of devices generally? the logic sounds convincing, but do you buy into it?
I am not sure yet Mike. I do really like my T Mobile G1. I have not put alot of thought into any of the practical uses they could be developed for. As a tech if they could be programmed to do a sleep actigraphy prior to a sleep study it would help alot. Most people do not feel out their sleep log. I think we are going to see personal media devices become much more individualized to our personal needs. A more personal computer per say. If your car can pick up patterns in your steering to determine wjen you are sleepy then I am sure they can do something useful with the phones. Imagine if they could record your medical statistics and send them directly to your physician. With the development of simpler to use technology it is going to make it easier for the everyday person to monitor their own health.
