Dr. Ari Klapholz spoke at last night's NYC AWAKE meeting on Sleep Apnea comorbidities. one point he brought to our attention that floored me is just how damaging alcohol is for sleep. he said that even alcoholics who quit cold turkey 10 years ago to this day live with permanent sleep fragmentation because of their abuse of alcohol for so many years.
is alcohol in any quantity beneficial to sleep, or is it all bad?
My understanding is that although ETOH may help you get to sleep, the sleep is not as good as without alcohol for that exact reason- sleep fragmentation. That's really a shame about permanant sleep fragmentation even after you stop drinking. As a former alcoholic (for a short time) and drug addict (off and on for many years)
I have to wonder how that affects my numbers now (AI and AHI), as well as general sleep quality.
I know my dog kept waking me up during the night to go out- I try and put him off as he won't come back in and if he starts barking at 4:AM it's not good- but I feel it this morning. He must have woken me up about six times, poor boy I guess he really had to go.
It is my understanding that ETOH use or abuse (any use) inhibits the sleep cycle. When it comes to the night cap....Just say no..
Even a late dinner with Wine suppresses the ability to maintain adequate sleep and impairs delta sleepand may cause REM delay.
