I often see posts in the apnea forums from fellow apneans suffering the effects of aerophagia w/their CPAP therapy. Often it is a temporary, altho uncomfortable, situation as we get acclimated to CPAP therapy. Occasionally it is so uncomfortable or long lasting as to be intolerable. I ran across a few suggestions at an online DME supplier's site that might help w/this problem.

1] Adjust the position of your head so that it's not tilting forward while you sleep - keep the airway wide open
2] Talk to your prescribing doctor about reducing the pressure setting on your CPAP machine
3] Consider a machine with exhalation pressure relief - this will help prevent involuntary swallowing; in conjunction with an automatic machine your aerophagia days may be over rather quickly
4] Consider an automatic CPAP machine - they generally deliver much less than prescribed pressure

Compliments of Andrew Senske

I would suggest as you visit the various apnea support forums that you read not only the various threads but also the educational articles that are linked from them.

Judy, can you give those of us who don't know what aerophagia is some direction on what aerophagia is and how we'd know if we had it?
to put it crudely, does this mean that you're passing gas and farting more than usual?

Doggone it, Mike. This is NOT the first time I've posted a reply and not had it show up. I didn't even realize my reply hadn't been posted until you posted your second post.

Aerophagia is air swallowing. It can cause bloating and a full feeling and lots of burping and often eventually passing lower gas as well. So, yeah, as you said, and considerably more than usual. It can get very uncomfortable if you really swallow a lot of air.
Qyite often here, I get a Done, but Error on Page. And quite often I can NOT click on my post to edit it. This is one of those times. Again.
I take that back. I can click on it all I want - until the cows come home even, but it won't allow me to edit it. It just sits there and does NOTHING. Like this time too.
Judy, you might have an outdated browser. if you haven't updated your internet browser lately, it's probably a good idea. they're free and will give you less headaches. the latest version of mozilla firefox is a good one and is easy to download here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html

I don't think I'm using anything but MicroSoft Explorer and I've forgotten which version of that. I suspect that it might be my slow speed dialup. This site loads slower than most of my other regular sites I visit and I suspect that maybe I start typing too soon or start scrolling too soon. I know sometimes I try to start scrolling down the page and it isn't ready to scroll yet and just sits there and thumbs its nose at me until its darn good and ready to completely finish loading.
