Advice sought: Mask suggestions for mouth-breather

I don't like wearing chin straps.

I really like my Mirage Micro nasal mask because:

  • the headgear is a better fit;
  • I don't get the irritating blowing air;
  • I'm extremely light sensitive and can wear it covering my whole head (and eyes) with a big black scarf with no effects on breathing, BUT
  • I tend to get a lot of irritation around my nose when I use the Mirage Micro.

I switched to nasal pillow style at the recommendation of a RT. I rather like this style but, again, have to use a chin strap (as I have to with the Mirage Micro). My problems with the two nasal pillow masks are similar:

  • My Swift FX headgear slips during the night; the blowing air is annoying.
  • My Mirage Swift headgear also slips during the night; the blowing air is MADDENING.

Any advice from been-there, done-that veterans? I'm placing my order this week. I thought about trying the Liberty FFM but I thought I'd ask my Forum buddies for advice first.

Thanks!

PS:  I'm always willing to experiment.

PPS: I've tried two chin straps and actually liked the Ultimate Chin strap very much. The only problem: I wake frequently and want a sip of water; the Ultimate is a problem because the mask covers the mouth so completely. Still, I do recommend it to others and you without risk: it's returnable for a full refund within 30 days.

Wear a chinstrap and put a gallon of water by the bed.  Its hard to hold your breath and drink at the same time so take the mask off.  The reason you are dry is from the CPAP.  If you do not have the humidifier you should get one.  Or run one all night next to your bed.

ZolliStar, I'm also a mouth breather and us a FFM the Resmed Mirage Quattro and I also wear a chin strap as well. I find it keeps everything in place. I Occasionally get up to go to the toilet and I just pull the hose out of the mask and leave it on then re attach the hose. I'm also sensitive to light and noise so I wear ear plugs and an eye mask. I have finally got my routine down pat it does take me a few minutes getting ready prior to getting into bed. I am trying to learn to breath through my nose because I did try a nasal mask and pillow in the start but even with a chin strap my mouth would still open. Dr Park has a webinar this Tuesday night which talks about breathing, you may want to look up his website. http://doctorstevenpark.com
I find his talks informative and there free and you can ask questions.
