Hi

I have the difficult task of making a purchase of a cpap machine for my son (18). He was recently diagnosed with Marfans and has issues with wind pipe collapsing and classic apnea. He has been using a renatl machine and as we are in Manila we want to purchase one locally or we will have absolutely no after sales service or rental during breakdown.

My son travels a lot and is pretty clumsy. I am concerned the cleaning water filling and detachable parts are going to be the biggest issue. noise not so much as he can sleep through anything...

We ahve been offered the S9 autoset or the Philips  respironic...

I had no idea there were autos bipap and cpap, and have no idea wht the terms all mean. Sorry it is annoying when a complete newbie rocks up and asks basic questions but we have a real language issue with the sales rep and simple questions are not understood. SO any help is really appreciated.

thanks Vic

Both of the machines offered are great. They include a handy carrying/traveling case. He will only need to keep the machine as clean as he prefers. Some clean everyday and others almost never. Cleaning is a personal prefference. I clean mine about once a week. He will want to use distilled or filtered water whenever possible.

The first step is getting the machine. I would do whatever possible to get it and own it outright. There are some great online providers like 1800CPAP.com that may be able to help with present and later needs. Ask for Joe or Mark and tell them that Rock sent you.

vichere, the FAQ on the main page is a good place to start learning about apnea and therapy.

As Rock said both machines are good ones.  In a nutshell, CPAP gives one pressure, its the same all the time, Bilevel or BiPAP delivers a higher pressure when you inhale and a lower pressure when you exhale, and AUTO is set with a range of pressure from low to higher and gives you the pressure needed at any one time.  The doc may prescribe one or the other depending on a patients needs and comfort or his/her personal experience and preference.

There is not much to detachable parts -the hose connects to the mask and to the machine.  Each end is easily removed.  The humidifier water chamber may be lifted out for cleaning or filling.  Every  mask is different, some have replaceable parts.
