Sleep Apnea Claims Life of State Rep. Robert Donatucci

"
State Rep. Robert C. Donatucci, 58, who received 84 percent of the vote last week in being elected to his 16th House term, died asleep in his bed in South
Philadelphia early Tuesday, his family said.

His death was related to sleep apnea, for which he was being treated, ....

He found the mask uncomfortable and did not complete the test, but had resolved to lose a few pounds, his brother said. He had no history of heart problems. .... "

Five years ago, there would have been no mention of sleep apnea. That is some progress, but not enough for Donatucci who could not deal with the primitive therapy.

That's so sad. And that's the exact reason why I've done everything I can to make sure that my fiance's mask is as comfortable as it can be and that all his equipment works and is properly cleaned to make his experience with his cpap as good as it can be... because so many people give up on it if the mask doesn't seal properly or leaks in the middle of the night.

As an aside, I'm really thankful there's a lot of information about sleep apnea on the internet I could gather or I'm afraid my future husband would have also given up.
jnk, You remind me of a guy I worked with on the night shift in a small manufacturing plant one summer when I was in college. The big dude was out of jail on bail awaiting trial for second degree murder. He had beaten a 26-year old man to death in a fight in the parking lot of a rough bar.

One night around 3:00 a.m. he came into the breakroom and sat down across from me. There was no one else in the room and he began talking about the charges against him. He said, "I won't be convicted. I did not kill the guy. I saw the coroner's report. It said he died of a heart attack."
The point is that he chose NOT to do what was needed to improve his health. Had he chosen treatment he would probably still be alive. It is sad to see anyone go no matter what the age. My heart goes out to his family.

Great education on the need for PAP therapy Rooster. I will use this and many of your articles to help keep my people on PAP.
I read that he did not finish the study because he found the mask uncomfortable and resolved instead to lose a few lbs.

Doesn't the article say that he got a sleep study the week before he died? Isn't that taking his health seriously?

Not to be a total tool or naysay you but just popping in to say, my fiance had his machine within a week of his test. Though I think it was just because of lucky scheduling/possibly someone canceled so the office called him in.

Most find the mask uncomfortable at first. Most resolve to lose weight. The article says, and I quote: "related to sleep apnea, for which he was being treated." The specifics of that "treatment" are not given.

Few people have machines, or follow-up appointments, within ONE WEEK of their titration study, do they? The fact that he had the study tells me he was pursuing something. Right?

Perhaps more information will come out. Newspapers are not known for getting the facts right on such things in the earliest reports. The information seems confusingly contradictory at this point. At least for me. But hey, I'm easily confused.

Donatucci could not deal with the primitive therapy.
It also said that he turned down treatment in favor of dropping a few pounds. Do I need to reference some of our past debates on how you feel about this decision jnk?
Sleep Apnea Kills CPAP Intolerant PA State Representative 7 Days after Winning House Seat

"Nov 12, 2010 – Sleep apnea has been listed as the cause of death for a prominent Pennsylvania State Representative. Robert C. Donatucci died in his sleep on Tuesday, just one week after he won the election for his 16th House term."

Great article, Rooster. I like the emphasis on getting some kind of treatment, rather than just abandoning CPAP without exploring other avenues such as surgery, and dental devices.

I would give more credibility to a relative quoting a doctor than the official cause of death on the death certificate. I would assume it would be respiratory arrest or cardiac arrest secondary to respiratory arrest, on the death certificate. What did Reggie White's death certificate say?

Yet another opportunistic, self-serving ad masquerading as an "article" from the "I Hate CPAP" dudes.

I hate IHateCPAPdotcom. They don't sufficiently stress the importance of giving CPAP the full shot before moving on to second-best approaches. But hey, that's just me.

By the way, when they say "listed" as the cause, they apparently mean listed in that one article above that quoted a relative quoting a doctor.

Do we know yet what was listed officially as cause of death on the certificate?
