I use a full face mask with my BiPAP, because I breathe through my mouth. I have tried just the nasal pillows and even with a chin strap, I still used my mouth to breathe.

My problem is this, and it may sound silly to some, but it really is disrupting my sleep. I wake up several times during the night because I've got so much air in my stomach (I presume it's from swallowing during sleep) that I literally have to sit up and belch it out. Please don't tell me to take an antacid, because this is not heartburn..it's just air. Does anyone have a solution or tips on preventing this?

Do you breathe through your mouth while your awake? Nasal congestion problems?
Rock, I have always breathed through my mouth..even during waking hours.
jnk, I do have GERD and take Nexium for it. I do not eat or drink before bedtime, because this seems to increase the reflux during the night. My BI-PAP is set at 25/23 with an additional 2 liters of O2. I always begin sleep on my right side, and always wake up on my stomach. I've learned to position my pillow so that I don't have leaks (that I'm aware of) and still have head support. How I swallow air when I'm laying on my stomach is beyond me, but it is very disruptive. I have to sit up because my stomach hurts. I sit up for maybe 15 seconds, and belch one long belch..could be 5-10 seconds long, then I can lay back down and sleep comfortably until I fill up with air again. Thankyou for the link. :)
I told my sleep doc about this. He had no tips for me, and honestly, this problem is getting worse.
That is a very high presssure. When I was running that high I also had to belch air, but not until the morning. It may just be a hazard of such a high pressure, but I hope you find a solution, keep us posted.

Holy hell! 25/23 BiLevel? I agree with JNK. Get on an Auto VPAP 25. And nasal pillows should have never been used on pressures that high. Of course you are swallowing air. Who wouldn't on those pressures? How long have you been on BiLevel therapy? Have you had an allergy test done or seen an ENT to see if your nasal passages need to be worked on? You look to be a young healthy lady and is surprises me that you would be on that much support at night. And, the addition of O2 to the mix has me curious as well. Aerophagia is a serious issue and needs to be addressed.

I would be interested in seeing your sleep study.
I will have a copy sent to me and scan it for you to review. All I do know about my sleep study is that I had over 300 episodes in 6 hours. My O2/SPO2 sats went down to 54%. The doctor (pulmonologist) had me on a CPAP to begin with at a high rate, but I was still very tired and waking myself up all night by feelings that I was suffocating, so he did another sleep study and upped me to 25/23 BI-PAP. I started to have headaches, so he did an autopap for a week and changed my pressure by adding O2.to my BI-PAP. Been on this pressure for a year and a half. I'm not having headaches now...my O2 sats stay up around 99% on my Bi-PAP..and I'm finally having dreams again, but now this air in my stomach problem is interfering with my sleep. I just really don't know what to do.
I've had a quadruple bypass at 43 years of age, (before starting on PAP therapy) and my pulmonologist said my O2 sats contributed to my heart problems (well that and genetics).
I've never even considered going to an ENT, even though I worked for one for a couple of years, so I'm realy unsure about my nasal passages. I do always feel stuffy, so I think it may be a good idea to go see one and be scoped to find out.Just always considered it normal to breathe through my mouth because I've done so for many years.
What is your Bipap set at and how long have you been on it?. Is the first question and have ruled out sinus conjestion.
Was this lab Accredited and was the Dr boarded in sleep? But agree nasal pillow is not what you need you need, get with your DME provider to change masks to nasal mask the Activa LT works very good and dose nor require a very tight fit you should look into it. I you were my patient that’s the first mask I would have put you on. I the lab was not Accredited DO NOT GO BACK THEIR same lab if the Dr not is not boarded in sleep find one it makes a difference. Yes the lab is accredited and the doctor is board certified in sleep disorders. He is chief director over the lab, so I do trust him very much.
I can't use a nasal mask, because I breathe through my mouth...awake as well as asleep.
I would asked yoou Dr to put you back on auto bipap with following setting 15/11 as the low end then for the high use the setting that you are at now then down load data card in tow weeks to see if thier was change with a differnt mask. Then I would start with the new Resperonics full face Full life now remember all full face mask will leak as long as its not in your eyes and not making a laud noise dont worry about it for now. Do you still have any heart problems I dont know your wait but with a 50lbm loss can drop the preassure big time. Ask your Dr I have had a few with this problem they worked with thier Dr lost the weight and when we tested them the setting was a lot lower than before. I my self are fitting that battle my setting are 15/10. And the last thing your Bipap should have EPR setting make sure it on 3 if your bipap dose not have that have your Dr change the Bipap to a Devles Bipap ( not sure on spelling) I tried it and it has a lot more setting to make it easer to breath on. I will post it tomorrow when i get to work so yo can give to your Dr. Mike B RCP.psgt
