Sorry to be so crude but sometimes after using my CPAP mask I wake up and start burping and farting for hours, as if the machine has filled my stomach with air. OK I'm pretty sure that's what happens but why is that happening? Something's wrong surely?

Ask away. :) No, I didn't have this issue before. In fact, on 2 nights I went without my C-Pap and didn't have any issues (just to be sure).

Hate to ask, but did you burp and fart for hours BEFORE you started CPAP therapy?
This happens to me. I just figure it is a sign the mask is staying on. It is happening less with time. It is just from swallowing air I think and with the extra pressure the esophagus maybe stays open?
Wow !! I have to say that I never had this problem until about 3 months ago. Only, I am waking up at 2-3 am and my stomach is distended, it truly looks like someone blew a balloon up in there and my whole body is full of air !! I have stopped using my bipap because of it. I think my body has changed and my pressure is too high ( this is a self diagnosis ). But, I did tell my dr about it and he didn't want to do another sleep study although my last one was last year, and he did not want to change my pressure "at this time"..... so we shall see !!! but keep me posted !
Aerophagia is the medical term for this. Bilevel, FLEX or EPR, full face mask etc.. are all trouble-shooting techniques. It does happen & often goes away naturally, but sometimes it seems to be worse in smaller framed people.....
I got this also when my pressure was increased after titration. The idiot DME had decided in all her wisdom to set the EPR to #1 level (Expiratory Pressure Relief - available on Resmed machines......I don't know if the equivalent is available on the other manufacturer's CPAPs). So I expereinced this for quite some time, not knowing what caused it or how to correct it, since my DME lacked the knowledge AND THE INCLINATION TO SEEK THE KNOWLEDGE TO HELP A CLIENT ! Finally, I decided to use logic, thinking if air is going to the stomach causing bloating and farts (and it was also gathering in my cheeks at times......what I nicknamed the "Chipmunk Syndrome") then it means there is too much excess air getting backed up and not released through the vents (I have a full face mask with vents). So I must be having trouble exhaling enough air against the continuous air pressure of the air coming in from the hose/machine. Access to the adjust EPR is usually allowed in the patient menu........so I adjusted my pressure to #2 (a bit of difference but not enough) and then to #3 and voila.........problem fixed. I was able to exhale more fully, then when I inhaled the air did not go to places other than my lungs. Perhaps this will work for you too. I also believe that I read somewhere that the belching/farting problem can also be worsened by certain masks, but can't recall. Hope the EPR thing is available to you and that adjusting it proves to be effective in eliminating the problem. If not the other support forum is apneasupport followed dot com (can't type it out fully here, as links are not allowed I believe). There is a VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE PERSON who will pop up to answer that and other questions for newbies.......username "Crohnie-Too" I have received a LOT of help from him/her and from "Jessy 49" on that forum.
Good Luck.......let us know if the above suggestion works for you.
Do you know why it would be worse on smaller framed people? I guess that would be me.

Distended? Me too. Feel like I'm pregnant sometimes.

D. W. How come I have to pull out the dictionary every time I read one of your posts? LOL.
Luckily I have never had these problems associated with CPAP. Eructation.

Eructation and excessive morning flatus can be symptoms of other issues regardless of using nPAP. If it continues more than a few weeks contact your Healthcare provider.
Ah, you must be a mouth breather. I use a Mirage Quattro full-face mask and after almost one year on CPAP, I still wake up burping and having flatulence. Did I have this problem before CPAP, the answer is No. But, of course, I wasn't sleeping because of the repeated apnea episodes so I figured this is a trade-off!

The burping, etc. actually did get better for me and sometimes I don't even realize when I wake up that I burp so it must be sporadic. At times, it seems to be the first thing I do after I take the mask off and then stand up.

I could not tolerate the type of mask that covered only my nose/nostrils. I would wake up gasping for air because I would try breathing through my mouth and that's a no-no with the other type of mask. So, I'm stuck with the full-face.

Now, if someone could only tell me how to get rid of the deep indentations in my cheeks when I take the mask off, that would be appreciated!

Hang in there, it does get better.
Have not noticed anything like that.
just lucky?
I'd like to know how to get rid of the indentations in my face too!

If you are worried about the smell, this can be treated. You have a lot of "bad bugs" in your digestive system. Take 3 acidophilis a day until the smell improves. If the flora in your gut the right kind your gas is virtually non smelling.
