My apnea is under control with the use of Bipap. Now my sleep cycle is off and I am now taken Ambien(sleep meds) for eight months. Realizing I cannot kept on this med for ever,I elected to stop taken Ambien. Now I am falling asleep but awakening around 200am after going to bed around 1000pm.

Can anyone suggest some type of alternative natural substance that can induce sleep. I am meditating and not getting frustrated but I definitely need help! Thanks Bob

Melatonin is an alternative natural substance that can induce sleep. Some people have luck with it. I think you can get it over the counter, but you want to be careful with the amount you take -- perhaps worth talking to your PCP (primary care physician) about.

For more info on Melatonin, check out Dr. David Zhang's powerpoint presentation on this topic at http://manhattanawake.org/meetings/past -- it's correlated with the January 6, 2010 Manhattan AWAKE meeting -- you can download the file there.
Have you stopped your caffeine intake early in the day?

I know I have had this problem before and the doctors have used low doses of anti-depressants to help and then after my sleep cycle straightens out I stop taking them. Don't know if that would work for you though.

I am now on an anti-depressant for depression so haven't used them for sleep for a few years.
milk
turkey
tryptonene is in turkey and i understand that it is milk
citalopram script from the doctors
Not being able to sleep is a pain. My rotating schedule causes what I like to call techsomnia. Insomnia brought on by shift work combined with a sleep education. Makes for some rough days. Some weeks I get stuck going to bed around 5pm and getting up between 1 and 3am. With my wife in school full time and 2 kids sleep at my house is a strategy. Everyone's house is crazy though. I hope.

It might help to keep a sleep journal. Log your sleep for a week or 2. Bedtime, wake time, and reasons for sleep interruptions. Look for problem patterns and work to solve them. Your sleep has been bad for a long time and you will find no quick fix. You have to troubleshoot sleep to a positve resolution.
Bob, benadryl helps me not only to get to sleep, but to stay asleep longer. There will also be a period of withdrawal from the sleeping pills, don't know how long you've been off of them. Being sure you are tired may help, walk the dogs about three or four hours before bed (not for three or four four hours, LOL). I don't know how to be more delicate than this, but sometimes self pleasuring helps me get back to sleep. Mike mentioned melatonin, I didn't read the link, but was researching it lately for jet lag. It's important to use it correctly and I understand timed release is best.
Good luck,
Mary Z.
Yes u can try taking Melatonin. It is a natural substance that our body naturally produces to help initiate sleep onset. I went to a sleep conference in FL last year and received samples of a product called BIOZZZ. It's all natural as well. I gave it to a few friends (can't give it out to my pts) who have issues staying asleep and they loved it. I even know some sleep techs who take it now. The website for the company is biprousa.com check it out.
Thankyou for the info Bob

Thanks for all the information.. It has been 3 weeks discontinuing Ammbien. Doctor has now prescribed a antidepressant (Doxeprin) and Rozerem (Meletonin) My intention is this will work. Therapy also works.

Bob
Ambien worked well for me. I had the 4 hour sleep w/it too. Never did try the Ambien CR.

I just added one Tylenol tablet (NOT Tylenol PM) and that got me 5-6 hours of sleep and after a week of the Ambien I just toughed it out for several nights w/just the Tylenol (NOT Tylenol PM) and thereafter only needed an Ambien on occasion. Usually if I knew I had something coming up the next day that was a cause for excitement or worry.

Sonata was a joke. I might as well have taken a sugar pill.

Lunesta was good for a full 7 hours the ONE night I took one - BUT - the HOR-EYE-BUL aftertaste that lasted well into noon the next day despite multiple teeth brushings and mouth wash rinses and mint tablets .... it just was NOT worth it to me to take another Lunesta!!! That aftertaste was VILE.
Your welcome good luck. therapy helps with a lot of things.

Caffeine intake has stopped. A low dose of anti-depressant is being used and with great success. Sleep has improved 90% I take it at night, no more ambient or other meds, only the anti-depressant. Yea!!!!!!!
