Hello all:

I am a 34-year-old male who recently got a sleep-apnea diagnosis. I've found a mask that I like to some degree: the Mirage Swift LT. It took some practice, but nowadays I usually don't have a problem falling asleep with the mask on.

However, for one reason or another, I take it off in the middle of the night. It used to be more of a subconscious thing (I'd wake up and the mask would inexplicably be on the floor); now I'm generally aware I'm doing it. I've tried upping the humidifier setting, have put Vaseline on my nose to prevent nasal-pillow irritation, and taken a variety of maneuvers to ensure that the mask doesn't get filled with water. But there's some X factor which keeps me from wearing this thing the whole night. I wake up and I just know it will be easier to fall back if I remove the mask.

Any suggestions? How have others moved beyond this point? I feel like I'm really close to getting a regenerative night's sleep; I just need to cross a few small hurdles.

Warm thanks,

Ross

for several hours before sleep and at two hour intervals apply a thin i say lay of vasiline
the vasiline has to be applied thinly as the skin needs to breath

lets recap six hours before bed apply, four hours before bed apply two hours apply
perhaps 30mins before bed apply

do not apply any more vasiline before you go to bed as it will not have soaked in

secret a little and often and the skin must breathe
try wearing your PAP during the day while you are watching tv or doing a crossword puzzle. This will help you get used to wearing it.
Hi Ross, I have found if I put 2 pillows side by side and lay my head in the middle , all air leaks stay quiet till I fall back to sleep. It will get better.I def think of my mask fondly, as a life saving device.Just like braces or new shoes, you'll get better everyday.Just don't give up. Keep positive. I have learned on here that vaseline or chap stick is a no no.Not to be in haled, and it eats up your mask. The sore nose will go away. Do you have a cover for your hose? If not measure it and have a seamstress stitch you one.its softer and keeps the water from condensing, I hate that water up the nose.maybe turn the humidifier down a bit. strap covers for the face are wonderful also. I sew and made silk padded ones that I can launder.and it makes all the difference in the world.Good luck and health to you, Susan
Thanks, everyone. It's interesting, the different viewpoints on Vaseline. I don't want to hurt my mask, but I've been advised to use it by at least two sources. I similarly have heard contradictory things about whether the humidifer is more likely to produce excess water at a higher or lower setting. But these ideas are all worth playing around with. I'll keep you posted!

Best,
Ross
