I hear a lot about the promise of these new technologies, but haven't seen any have any widespread commercial success yet:
TOKYO, Nov 05, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- SIXCF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Siix Corp. (TSE:7613), a provider of electronic manufacturing services, has teamed with the Osaka Bioscience Institute Foundation to develop a simple device for measuring and monitoring brain wave patterns associated with sleep.
Monitoring of brain waves to evaluate people with sleep apnea syndrome and other sleep disorders normally requires the placement of four to eight electrodes on the head and the recording of data in a room full of special equipment.
The new device is around the size of a package of cigarettes and simply fits on the head. That means people with sleep disorders can take the devices home so monitoring can be carried out in the comfort of their own beds in the course of their normal daily lives.
Siix will work to miniaturize the circuitry and expects to commercialize a product next spring. The current prototype measures brain waves, but extra electrodes can be added to also measure the electrical signals associated with muscle movement for breathing and eyeball movements.
One obvious market is medical facilities that handle sleep disorders, but Siix also anticipates demand from companies that develop beds and other sleep-related furniture and foods. A device fitted to drivers to detect dozing at the wheel is another possibility.
