I think you should choose a time that feels right to you. (Maybe Rock will disagree because there are studies that show what time is best to go to sleep.) But if you like to stay up late just decide when you will go to bed and then get up 8 hours later. My job requires that I be in the office around 8:15-9:00, but I like to be up early to visit with my husband over breakfast and to work out and not hurry getting into work. So I think you should set your own personal 8 hour sleep time.

Thanks, Bee! I'm giving this some serious thought. I just hate to give up late night reading. I love it. But I s'pose I could adapt.....do you think the actual time I pick has any impact on a scheduled bedtime? I'm retired and don't have to get up any certain time. I'm just wondering if I could schedule but schedule late, like midnight which is usually close to when I go to bed now. Do you have any thoughts about that?

I think it helps me to have a set schedule that I do not vary. I go to bed at 9:00-9:30 and get up at 5:30-6:00 each and every day. I work so I don't have to do that on the weekends, but I do anyway. I make sure to get physical exercise so I am actually tired and not just mentally fatigued so my brain doesn't keep bouncing around. I always sleep the entire night, I have from the first. I wake up for a few seconds around 2:00am and sometimes around 4am, but am right back to sleep. Maybe it is the schedule, and the exercise.

Best of luck to you on your journey to sleep! You are on your way.
Susan,
sometimes I feel silly using this name but it makes most people giggle so the name goes where I go. ;)

Thanks for the friend add!

Omigod, if the day ever comes that I'm OVER-sleeping, I'll be orgasmic!! Seriously, I have no idea what that will be like, but I'm ready to find out. (By the way, I love your screen name. I'm gonna send you a friend invitation!!

Thank you for the encouragement and the hope, Miss Tush!!

I just had my first full night's sleep with mine about 3 weeks ago, I was so stoked! Just wait, before long you'll be OVER-sleeping in it! ;)
Personally, I aim for a midnight to 8:30 AM sleep schedule. I've always been a night owl but as I've gotten older I've found that midnight is more comfortable than 3 AM for bedtime. *sheepish grin* For me that 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM seems to be my best sleep window so I try NOT to HAVE to be awake before then. And I'm seldom sleepy before midnight.
Thanks, Judy--you always have something to say that's helpful to me. I'm pretty much the same. Used to being on my own time since I retired. I'm gonna give it a try tonight and see what happens.

Aaahhhhh, that's okay. Silly's good for the soul and it'll get 'ya through when nothing else seems to work. I like it myself, so just silly yourself with me all you want. Besides THAT'S a funny screen name!!

I agree that your sleep schedule should be something that you are comfortable with. I have no schedule, and i am comfortable with that. Sleep is a very personal thing. There is no such thing as normal sleep. There is your sleep and my sleep. They will have simularities, but will rarely be the same. Sleep wake cycles vary from individual to individual. The studies show stats based off of averages. I have yet to see what I would call text book sleep.

As for some nights being better on PAP then others, well that is just sleep. Even before Cpap or apnea I would guess that your sleep was not perfect every night. It is the nature of the beast. I do not have apnea or am I on CPAP. Some days i sleep great others not so well.
Thanks for the clarification, Rock. I've decided I'm gonna shoot for in bed at midnight every night and see what happens.

As others have said, you need to set your own sleep schedule.....whatever amount of time makes you feel rested the next day. For me, I know I have to get up at 6:30am and by going to bed at midnight my body didn't have the time to get the rest it wanted and I started to feel tired while at work during the day again. Once I realized this was my fault I started making myself go to bed around 10:30 again and I am sleeping sound until 6-6:30am....I won't say I don't wake up on occasion, but for the most part I am feeling well rested and not sleepy at work. I guess it's like going on a diet, you have to force yourself to change your eating habits and if you don't, you won't loose weight. Good Luck!
I absolutely agree with you, Dave. If I were still working I'd be doing the EXACT same thing. I can't imagine how I'd function otherwise...

it is not so much the length of the sleep you get, but the quality. After a week, I had more energy. I even began to lose weight. Sleep is a wonderful thing.

But time goes by, the energy slipped away the weight came back. They increased my pressure. It has been 11 years. I feel now like I am sucking the air through the hose and they say everything is fine.
Carol, are "they" the same doctor(s), local DME supplier(s)?? Has the local DME supplier checked your xPAP w/a manometer to make sure it is still producing the pressure it is set at? When was the last time you have an in-lab titration study? Is your xPAP an APAP? Maybe an at-home titration study w/an APAP for two weeks would better determine what pressure(s) you now need? If your current sleep doctor/sleep lab isn't interested in helping your find the reason for the lack of therapy efficacy it is time to find a new sleep doctor/sleep lab. Has your family doctor checked you for problems other than OSA that could be contributing to your weight gain and feeling so tired again? Thyroid? anemia? nutritional status? medications? chronic pain? lung function?, etc., etc.
I did really well last night with my sleep. I went to bed around 10:15 and didnt wake up until sometime around 6:30 this morning. I did wake up twice with mask leaks. I checked the stats on my machine and it shows that I have 39 minutes of leak time. Most of that is from the mask they gave to replace the Mirage Quattro. I am now back on my initial mask and it doesnt leak like the second mask.
Also, I am a sleep walker. I have not had any sleep walking episodes since I have been on the CPAP. I don't know if it has anything to do with that, either way I'm stoked about that. Nothing worse than waking up in the kitchen rummaging through the cabinets.
Ohhhh I almost forgot I got my BreathEzy CPAP pillow yesterday and I LOVE it..I think that was a major factor in me sleeping as long as I did last night. For those "newbies" that are thinking about getting one, it is my personal opinion that they are worth it. At least it was for me.
