I had a patient this week that was hating his humidifier like I've never seen a person hate anything.

Didn't know a person could become so impassioned by a little water in the air.....

But any-who! This patient swore up and down that the air he was breathing, (on 10cmH20) with a Optilife interface, "wet jungle air" with a humidity setting of 1 using a Remstar M Series Blower.

I have never heard of this problem in literally thousands of patients. Not even on HH settings of 3.

He thought that he heard of a CPAP humidifier that was ultrasonic instead of heated. In my own research I couldn't find an ultrasonic humidifier for use with a CPAP. I found several for home use, but none that could actually be integrated with a CPAP.

Anyone hear of such a thing? Our Respironics rep looked at me like I was crazy...which is ironic because she's crazy.

That is the funniest thing I have read on SleepGuide.com so far! I'm still laughing while I'm typing. And what is wrong with jungle air? Unfortunately, I have never heard of an ultrasonic humidifier, but I had to share my laughter with you! Why doesn't the patient just turn the heater to zero and see if that is less jungly?
There is no such thing as ultrasonic HH for cpap. The humidifier heating plate is not a very complex concept. It's basically a cooking plate. As far as I know, the heat is not "precisely" calibrated to the rheostat setting, so the heat can vary from machine to machine. Between manufacturers, heat levels can vary greatly,(i.e. a 2 setting on a M series can be like a 4 on an S8 - and vice versa.) Another thing is the room temp. I'm sure you know the affect on condensation also differs with varying room temperatures. FP has the thermosmart technology. I know a couple sleep docs that use it and prefer it. Sounds like he had a faulty rheostat or temp selector mechanism though.I have seen this a couple times. Hope this helps.

Does the patient require humidification? I can't tolerate a humidifier and feel the same as your patient about it.
Never heard of an ultra sonic humidifier. Sounds to me like this pt just needs to use his machine without the humidifier.
Thanks for the responses. I couldn't find such a thing as an ultrasonic humidifier for CPAP either.

He did require humidity. I don't know that he had a faulty plate, though he may have. I just think he was a little quirky and wanted something a little different.

I really can't relate to the feeling of heated humidity at 1 feeling too humid. Even at 5 on an M series just feels like a steam room...which really isn't that bad. He may have been much more sensitive to humidity than most. Some people have better senses of smell than me. My wife thinks I stink sometimes and I think I smell like a petunia. Oh well...

Thanks again for the responses.

Well, finally, this one problem I DON'T have with humidification issues!!!! Funny post, Jason!!
